Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball battled but came out on the wrong end of a 72-64 final to visiting Gannon Wednesday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots trailed 50-45 heading to the final quarter of play. Edinboro scored the first nine points of the quarter to take a 54-50 lead with 7:12 to play. Gannon answered back with an 11-4 run of its own to regain the lead 61-58.
Gillian Fisher hit a jumper to cut the lead to 61-60 with 3:04 to play, but seven straight Golden Knight points pushed the lead back out to 68-60. Gannon was solid from the line to hold off a push by the Scots.
The teams played a back-and-forth first quarter with neither team holding a two-possession lead at any point including four lead changes and four ties. A Bri Claxon triple was the difference as Gannon took a 16-13 lead out of the first.
The Golden Knights extended the lead to seven, 26-19, with a 10-6 open to the second quarter. Edinboro trimmed the lead to four 28-24, but a 5-2 run to end the quarter sent the teams into the locker room with Gannon up 33-26.
In the third, Edinboro used a pair of
Lauren Mullen triples and four points from
Ashten Boggs to cut the lead to 40-38 at the 5:56 mark. The Golden Knights would push the lead back to 46-39 on a Samantha Pirosko layup with 3:47 on the clock.
Morgan Gentile and
Hayley Sims would each connect on 3-points to bring the Scots back within one, 46-45. Pirosko scored the final four points of the quarter to make it 50-45 Gannon after three.
Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures led by 17 each from Sims and Mullen. Sims added five boards, three steals and two assists while Mullen grabbed three boards.
Rana Elhusseini added 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as well as four steals. Gentile chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.
Emma Wright paced the Golden Knights with 19 points. Pirosko finished with 16 points and eight boards. Claxon added 13 points.
Despite the loss, Edinboro clinched a playoff spot with losses by Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst. The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Clarion on Senior Day. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
