Edinboro, Pa. -- Despite two monstrous double doubles from Kierell Green and Dominique Keyes, the Edinboro men's basketball team fell to Cal 106-97 on Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Fighting Scots fell to (5-16) overall.
Off the opening tip it was Edinboro who came out with a strong 7-0 lead off jumper from Jack Gallagher and Jaden Harper, while being topped off with a three-pointer from Green. Edinboro shot an efficient 50% from the field in the first half.
Later in the first half the Scots stayed in the lead with an impressive 8-0 run that was fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Green. Suddenly, with less than ten minutes to go in the first half, the Scots led the Vulcans 27-18.
Cal quickly countered Edinboro's attack with a 12-0 run which gave them their first lead of the game. With 7:53 left in the half, Cal led 32-29.
Minutes before the half, Green hit an outside jumper which was followed by a big dunk from Keyes. The Edinboro offense remained steady as the Scots only trailed by one point.
The Scots went into the halftime trailing 54-46 the Vulcans.
To open the second half, it was Cal who hit two consecutive shots to increase their lead to double digits and forced an early Edinboro timeout.
Harper connected on a deep three-pointer, which was one of seven for Edinboro in the second half. The Scots put together a 16-5 run that was formed from the free-throw line. During the run Edinboro connected on nine free-throws as the Scots trailed 65-62.
Down the stretch with efficient shooting from deep, the Vulcans opened up a fifteen-point lead on Edinboro after a three-pointer from Keith Palek III.
With twenty-seven seconds left Keyes would finish at the rim to cut the deficit to six points. Edinboro's full-court pressure wasn't enough near the end as time expired. The Scots fell to the Vulcans with a 106-97 final.
Green finished with a huge double-double including 24 points and 19 rebounds. Keyes matched his double-double with one of his own, including 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Naim Miller added 15 points, while Gallagher and Harper also reached double figures.
Edinboro will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Seton Hill University for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
