Washington, D.C. – The Fighting Scots earned their first win of the season away at the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The match saw Edinboro go behind to as many as six goals towards the end of the second quarter, but the team rallied together and overcame the deficit to take a 20-14 victory.
"The team is starting to bond as a group, with a more positive atmosphere which showed in the way we kept fighting and didn't quit," Head Coach
Anthony Turini said on the first win of the season. "The offense is helped by having more experienced players this year, that with a positive attitude will keep us improving."
Rylee Jones was the catalyst for the Edinboro attack, leading the team with eight goals and four assists. Jones also helped in regaining possession for the team with four ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Caroline Zentis added four goals to her one already this season, as well as two assists to help Edinboro fight back in the game. Zentis recovered six ground balls to regain possession, tied with
Lexi Boyk for the most by an Edinboro player on the day.
Emma Lamica and
Traci Culver each scored three important goals for the Scots. Both were on target early in the game to keep Edinboro in the match, before a flurry of goals towards the end saw Edinboro over the line without reply from UDC. Culver added two assists alongside five ground balls with Lamica who is another of the Freshmen class adding one assist and three ground balls.
Kenna Sinisgalli and
Lexi Boyk were on the scoresheet with one goal each. Sinisgalli also contributed with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
This result surpasses any single goal tally from last season, showing the firepower that has been added to the team alongside a tougher defensive set up. Edinboro totaled 38 shots in the game to UDC's 27.
Savannah Fischer had seven important saves in the game, with one team save. Edinboro had two spells in the game with five straight goals without reply, showing the resolve the team showed to win the game.
"As we continue to grow as team we need to keep focusing on the little things that are going to make us better, this will help the program continue to move in the right direction." Said Head Coach Antony Turini when looking ahead to the upcoming games. Edinboro travel to Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC on Mar. 7 with the game scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
