Manchester, N.H. – The Edinboro volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening day of the St. Anselm Invitational Saturday afternoon in their opening action of the season.
In the first match of the day, Edinboro swept Saint Michael's 3-0 winning the first two sets by matching 25-19 scores before winning the third 33-31.
In the first set, the Scots trailed 14-11, before scoring the next six points including two kills by Burrelli to take a 17-14 lead. The Purple Knights answered with a four one spurt to knot the set at 18. Edinboro closed out the set with a 7-1 run to win the set.
The Scots jumped out to a 17-9 advantage in the second set and never looked back taking the second set 25-19. The teams played a tight third set with the largest lead of the set being two. The teams traded set points before back-to-back kills by
Kathryn Raschilla closed out the match for the Scots.
Burrelli led the offense for the Scots with 10 kills and in the process became the 16th Fighting Scot to reach the 1,000 kill plateau.
Kasey Smith added eight and Makayla Neeldand six.
Erika Lindqvist recorded a game-high three aces.
Abigale Soboleski and
Laney Burns each dished out 17 assists.
Smith led the way defensively with three blocks. Burrelli added a team-leading 16 digs.
In the second match of the day, Edinboro dropped a 3-0 decision to Southern New Hampshire.
In the opening set, the Scots led 24-23, but three straight points gave the Penmen a 26-24 victory. In the second, the Scots trailed 23-21 and scored three straight points including two kills Neelands to grab a 24-23 lead. Ana Pimenta recorded three straight kills to give SNHU a 2-0 lead. The Penmen closed out the match 25-19 in the third.
Lindqvist led the offense with 10 kills. Burrelli added nine kills. Burns tallied 17 assists. Defensively,
Carly Pry tallied 11 digs and Lindqvist notched five blocks.
The Scot are back in action on Sunday. They play Southern Connecticut State at Southern New Hampshire at 1:30 p.m. before rounding out the invitational with a trip to Saint Anselm at 4 p.m.
