Volleyball Tops Newman in Quincy Invitational Finale

Quincy, Ill. – The Edinboro women's volleyball team defeated Newman University 3-1 in the finale of the Quincy Invitational Saturday afternoon.
 
The Scots got out to a fast start in the first taking an 11-3 lead to open the match after back-to-back kills form Makayla Neelands. The Jets battled back to cut the lead to 17-15, but a two Newman errors and another Neeland kill made it 20-15 Scots. Newman would get as close as 21-17, but a 4-1 run closed out the set giving the Scots a 25-18 win.
 
With the second set tied 10-10, Edinboro scored four straight points to go up 14-10 and the Jets never got closer than three the rest of the set as the Scots tallied a 25-21.
 
After Newman claimed the third set 25-17, the Jets jumped out to a 9-4 advantage in the fourth. Edinboro answered with an 8-3 spurt with four different Scots recording a kill to tie the set at 12. The teams traded the lead back and forth to a score of 19-19. Edinboro scored three straight including a Jessica Hardin kill to take a 22-19 lead. The Scots closed out the set for a 25-22 victory.
 
Natalie Pallone paced the Edinboro offense with 11 kills while also tallying four blocks. Neelands tallied 10 kills while Burrelli finished with nine. Abigale Soboleski notched 20 assists while Laney Burns added 16 helpers.
 
Carly Pry recorded 16 digs and Burrelli added 15 digs. In addition to Pallone, Kasey Smith had four blocks and Hardin notched two.
 
The Scots return to action on Friday when they host Bloomsburg on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
