Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team battled No. 4 Gannon falling 90-76 Wednesday night in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots trailed 68-64 with 6:42 to play after a pair of Trinitee Harris free throws.
Hayley Sims hit a 3-pointer and
Morgan Gentile picked up a steal and a layup to put Edinboro ahead 69-68 with 6:09 to play.
Gannon answered with seven straight points to retake the lead 75-69. Gentile converted a layup at 3:47 to trim the lead to 75-71 before the Golden Knights closed the game on a 15-5 run including going 13-of-15 from the line down the stretch to secure the win.
With 4:42 left in the third, Samantha Pirosko finished an and-one to put Gannon up 56-44. The Scots answered with 12 straight with four different players scoring in the run to tie the game 56-56 with 2:20 remaining in the third. The Golden Knights closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 62-58 advantage into the final frame.
Both teams came out of the gate scoring four points each all in the paint. Gannon opened up a 10-4 lead when Maddy Wheatley scored a layup capping a 6-0 run at 5:08 of the first. The Gannon lead grew to eight, 16-8, with 3:18 to play in the quarter, but Edinboro closed out the first frame with a 6-2 spurt to cut the lead to 18-14.
The Scots pulled within one, 19-18, at the 8:12 mark of the second on a pair of Gentile free throws. The Golden Knights responded with a 9-2 run to push the advantage to 28-20 with 5:40 on the clock. Gannon led by as many as 12, 41-29 with 1:01 on the clock in the second before the Scots scored four straight on baskets from
Maura Suman and
Hayley Sims to close the gap to 41-33 at the half.
Sims paced the Edinboro offense with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists. Gentile chipped in 20 points, four boards, three helpers and three steals. Suman added 17 points, three boards and three assists.
Ashten Boggs was the fourth Scot to reach double figure scoring with 10.
Andrea Maibach finished the game with 22 points for the Golden Knights to go with seven rebounds and two assists. Pirosko added 20 points and nine boards while Bri Claxon chipped in 15 points.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host UPJ at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
