Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped an 80-65 decision to visiting Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots trailed by 12 early in the third quarter after Cassidy Crawford scored at the 9:42 mark.
Ashten Boggs hit a pair of free throws and
Morgan Gentile converted an and-one to cut the Mountain Cat lead to 38-31 with 7:56 left in the third. UPJ finished the quarter on an 18-8 run to take a 56-39 lead into the final quarter.
The Mountain Cat lead hovered between 13 and 16 for most of the fourth quarter. Olivia Fasick hit a 3-pointer at the 3:59 mark to make it 69-53. Edinboro scored six straight including four points from
Morgan Gentile to trim the lead to 69-59 with 3:03 to play. The lead stayed at nine, 74-65, after a
Lauren Mullen jumper, but UPJ finished the game 6-of-6 from the line to close out the game and set the final.
Edinboro grabbed a 4-2 lead out of the gate on buckets by
Hayley Sims and
Gillian Fisher. UPJ scored the next seven points to go ahead 9-4 with 5:47 remaining. The Scots answered back with a 9-5 spurt of their own cutting the lead to 14-13 on a Boggs jumper with 2:43 left in the opening quarter. The Mountain Cats closed the first with six straight to hold a 20-13 edge after one.
The UPJ led grew to 26-13 after a Fasick triple at the 8:08 mark of the second. Edinboro closed the gap to 31-24 with an 11-5 run capped by a Boggs layup at the 3:19 mark. After trading baskets, Crawford completed an old-school 3-point play to send UPJ into the half up 36-26.
Gentile led the Scots with 17 points to go with two rebounds, two steals and two assists. Boggs added 14 points and six boards off the bench.
Allyson Kirby scored nine points and six rebounds.
Crawford led the Mountain Cat offense with 22 points while Fasick tallied 21.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they make the trip to Mercyhurst. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
