Women’s Basketball Falls at Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team had their fourth quarter rally come up short in a 79-71 loss at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night in PSAC action.
 
The Scots trailed 70-52 with 4:42 remaining in the game after a Paige Woodford 3-pointer. The Scots turned up the pressure defensively and went on a 15-5 run to cut the lead to eight 75-67 after and Ashten Boggs layup with 54 seconds left on the clock. The Lakers went 4-for-4 from the line in the final minute to hold off the Edinboro surge.
 
Mercyhurst held a 7-5 lead early and then closed the first quarter a 20-11 run to take a 27-16 lead into the second quarter.
 
Edinboro scored the first six points of the second quarter with Morgan Gentile recording four of them to cut the lead to 27-22. The Lakers pushed lead back to 31-24 on a Julia Buchman jumper at the 4:29 mark of the second, but Hayley Sims scored four straight to trim the advantage to 31-28 with 3:26 left in the first half. Mercyhurst responded with a 13-4 run to close out the half and take a 44-32 lead into the break.
 
The Scots again came out fast at the start of the third going on an 8-2 spurt with Gentile scoring four of them to cut the lead back to six, 46-40, at the 8:01 mark of the third. The Lakers responded with a 10-2 spurt of their own to grab a 56-42 edge with 2:51 remaining in the third.
 
Gentile paced the Scots with 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting . Sims tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Boggs also scored in double figures with 10 points to go with four rebounds.
 
Danielle Grim led the Lakers with 18 points and nine boards. Woodford notched 11 points while Bailey Kuhns and Maria McConnell each scored 10.
 
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they travel to IUP for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Crimson Hawks.
