Gillian Fisher's last second shot to tie the game was waved off as the Edinboro women's basketball team dropped a 55-53 thriller to visiting IUP Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots trailed 53-50 after a Maria Cerro layup with 1:45 to play.
Morgan Gentile leveled the game on the next possession with an and-one at 1:37. The score remained tied until Rahmena Henderson scored a driving layup with .1 seconds left. Edinboro called timeout and advanced the ball, and Fisher made the shot on the inbound, but it was ruled she had caught the ball rather than tipped it resulting in it being waved off.
Edinboro led 42-39 after three quarters, but IUP scored the first five points of the fourth to grab a 44-42 lead.
Hayley Sims tied the game with a bucket at the 7:50 mark of the fourth. Henderson gave IUP the lead back with a pair of free throws.
Ashten Boggs tied the game and then four straight points from Sims put the Scot ahead 50-46 with 3:53 remaining. Henderson converted a 3-point play and Grace Centrulla made a layup to put the Crimson Hawks ahead 51-50 with 2:12 on the clock.
In the third, Boggs gave the Scots a 38-27 lead with 5:52 on the clock. Henderson and Fisher traded baskets to keep the lead at 11, 40-29, with 3:43 remaining in the quarter. The Crimson Hawks scored 10 straight to cut the lead to one, before Sims hit a jumper at the horn to push the lead back to 42-39 after three.
The Scots scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Fisher and Gentile. Henderson cut the lead with a triple, but Edinboro answered with seven straight to push the lead to 11-3 on a Fisher jumper at 6:22. NyShea' Weaver and Cerro scored buckets to make it 11-7, but the Scots closed the quarter with a 12-3 run to take a 23-10 led into the second.
IUP cut into the lead opening the second quarter with a 10-6 spurt to trim the deficit to 29-20. Edinboro scored the next four on baskets by
Maura Suman and Boggs, but the Crimson Hawks closed the quarter with four straight to make it 33-24 Scots at the half.
Sims paced the Scots with 17 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a block. Boggs finished the day just shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Gentile added 12 points while Fisher pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds.
Henderson led the Crimson Hawks with 17 points to go with three steals and three rebounds. Cerro tallied 15 points while Weaver tallied a double-double of 10 points and 18 rebounds.
The Scots are off on Wednesday and return to action on Saturday at Seton Hill. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m.
