Women’s Basketball Tops East Stroudsburg in Final Crossover Matchup

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored their fifth straight win with a 57-39 victory over visiting East Stroudsburg Wednesday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Fighting Scot defense was the story holding the Warriors to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field and keeping East Stroudsburg without a 3-pointer on the day. Edinboro forced 25 Warrior turnovers with including 17 steals and 21 points off those turnovers.
 
The Scots led wire-to-wire in the contest with Hayley Sims leading the way with 18 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Morgan Gentile added 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
 
Gentile scored the games first basket and the Scots opened the game with an 11-4 run capped by an Ava Haddad bucket at the 4:28 mark of the first quarter. Carley Adams scored at the 2:30 mark to cut it to 11-6, but Hope Garrity hit a trey with 1:18 left in the quarter and the Scot defense held the Warriors off the board to make it 14-6 after one.
 
East Stroudsburg struck first in the second with a Caitlin Martin layup, but the Scots had the answer with nine straight points led by four from Sims including a pull-up jumper at 6:42 to extend the lead to 23-8. The Warriors scored four in a row to trim the lead to 23-12 at 4:22. Gentile scored on back-to-back possessions and Ashten Boggs chipped in a layup extending the lead to 29-12 with 3:09 left in the second. The Warriors closed the half with a 4-2 push to cut the halftime deficit to 31-16.
 
The teams played an even third quarter with East Stroudsburg trimming the lead to 41-28 heading into the final frame.
 
In the fourth, the Warriors opened the quarter with a 5-2 spurt cutting the lead to just 10, 43-33, with 8:06 to play. Sims would score seven as the Scots went on a 11-2 run to take a 54-35 lead with 4:01 on the clock putting an end to the Warrior comeback bid.
 
The Scots continue PSAC play when they host Clarion at McComb Fieldhouse at 1 p.m. on Saturday. It will be the PSAC West opener for both teams.
