California, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team outscored host Cal 17-7 in the fourth quarter to rally past the Vulcans 57-51 Wednesday night in PSAC West action in the Convocation Center.
The Scots entered the fourth trailing 44-40, but
Ashten Boggs scored a basket on the first possession of the fourth quarter.
Hayley Sims scored the next six points for Edinboro to give the Scots a 48-44 lead with 6:11 seconds left in the game.
A pair of Dejah Terrell free throws and a Sierra Bermudez triple gave the Vulcans a 49-48 edge with 4:11 on the clock. Boggs and Terrell traded baskets making it 51-50 at the 2:43 mark. Sims gave the Scots the lead for good hitting a long 3-pointer at 1:27. Sims and Boggs each hit a pair of free throws in the final 12 seconds to close out the game for the Scots.
Edinboro trailed by nine at the break, 30-21, and Cal's Allycia Harris extended the lead to 32-21 on the first possession of the third. The Scots found their footing offensively going on 12-3 run capped by a Sims pull up jumper at 4:18 to cut the lead to 35-33. Bermudez pushed the lead back to six, 44-38, with a pair of free throws at the 1:00 mark of the third before
Ava Haddad scored to bring the Scots to within 44-40 at the end of the third.
The teams played a see-saw first quarter that featured six ties and four lead changes. The largest lead of the first for either team was four when Cal held an 11-4 lead with 5:38 to play. The Vulcans would hold a 19-16 advantage after one when Alicia Young hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Boggs started the scoring for the Scots in the second tying the game with an and-one at the 9:43 mark. Unfortunately for the Scots, the offense went cold after that with the next Scot points coming on two Sims free throws with three seconds left in the half. The good new for the Scots was they held the Vulcans to just 11 points in the quarter. Cal carried a 30-21 advantage into the break.
Sims led all scorers with 25 points and stuffed the stat sheet with three helpers, two rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Boggs tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Gillian Fisher tallied a team-high eight rebounds to go with eight points.
Terrell paced the Vulcan offense with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Harris added 11 points.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Clarion for a 1 p.m. tip against the Golden Eagles.
