Clarion, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team jumped out early and held off a late Clarion push to score a 63-57 road victory Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action inside Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
The Scots jumped out to an 11-5 lead after
Morgan Gentile completed an old-fashioned 3-points play at the 4:14 mark of the first quarter.
Lauren Mullen scored a layup and
Hayley Sims hit a pull up jumper to extend the lead to 15-5 with 3:07 on the clock. Clarion hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 15-7, but
Gillian Fisher made it 18-7 with a 3-pointer to close the scoring for the first quarter.
In the second, the Golden Eagles opened the frame with a 12-6 run cutting the advantage to 24-19 with 5:27 remaining in the half. Fisher made a layup and Sims hit a pair of free throws sandwiching a Sadre'a Rougeau jumper to make it 28-21 with 2:50 on the clock. Heather Ansell cut the lead to 28-24 with a triple, but the Scots went on a 7-2 spurt led by five points from
Ashten Boggs making it 25-26 at the 54 second mark.
Rougeau would answer with a triple of her own with 24 seconds to play in the second, but
Allyson Kirby pushed the Scot lead to 37-29 when Gentile found her open underneath with five seconds left in the second.
Edinboro grew its lead at the start of the third with an 8-2 run capped by a Boggs jumper at the 6:39 mark pushing the Scot advantage 45-31. Clarion answered with an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to 46-42 with 1:41 remaining in the third. Edinboro held a 50-45 edge heading to the fourth.
In the final frame, the Scots opened up a 59-49 lead on a Boggs layup with 5:44 to play. The Golden Eagles scored the next eight points to pull within 59-57 with 2:21 on the clock. The Scots closed out the game 4-of-6 from the line.
Gentile paced the Scot offense With 19 points. Boggs added 14 points, six boards, four steals and three assists. Sims recorded 10 points, a team-leading eight rebounds as well as three assists.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday with a trip Erie to take on Gannon. Tipoff I'd slated for 5:30 p.m.
