Women’s Basketball Takes No. 2 Gannon to the Wire

Erie, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Hayley Sims 3-pointer came off the rim as the Fighting Scots fell 57-54 to No. 2 Gannon in the Haggerty Events Center Wednesday night in PSAC West action.
 
Edinboro trailed 48-43 after a Maddy Wheatley and-one with 6:01. Morgan Gentile scored a layup assisted by Sims and then Sims hit a pull up jumper of her own to cut the lead to 48-47 with 3:47 on the clock. Andrea Maibach extended the lead with a layup at the 3:20 mark. Sims and Gillian Fisher each hit a pair of free throws to give Edinboro a 51-50 advantage with 2:13 to play.
 
Wheatley gave Gannon the lead back with two free throws before Sims hit a jumper with 1:31 to play to put the Scots back up 53-52. Sam Pirosko scored four straight for the Golden Knights to make it 56-53 with 26 seconds left. Maura Suman scored at the rim with 20 seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 56-54. Trinitee Harris split a pair of free throws and Sims buzzer 3-pointer was just off the mark to set the final.
 
Edinboro held a 26-24 lead at the half and Gentile extended it with the first bucket of the third quarter. Gannon scored five straight to take a 29-28 lead with 8:24 to play in the third. The Scots scored the next four to pull ahead 32-29 with 7:45 left in the quarter. Gannon closed out the quarter on a 14-6 run to take a 43-38 lead into the final frame.
 
Gannon got out to an early 7-4 lead after a Pirosko triple at the 6:47 mark of the first. Gentile trimmed the lead to 7-5, but the Golden Knights scored four straight to take an 11-5 advantage. Suman hit a trey and Gentile scored a layup to cut the deficit to 11-10 after one.
 
The Scots carried the momentum into the second quarter opening with 5-1 run to take a 15-12 lead at the 7:52 mark. The Golden Knights went on a 10-6 run to grab a 22-21 lead with 2:21 left in the half. The teams traded baskets before Suman hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds on the clock to send Edinboro into the half up 26-24.
 
Sims paced the Scot offense with 15 points, three steals and three boards. Fisher added 14 points and nine rebounds. Gentile also grabbed nine boards to go with 12 points. Suman tallied 11 points.
 
Pirosko led the Golden Knights with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kate Ratliffe was the second leading scorer at nine points.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Johnstown for a 1 p.m. tipoff against UPJ.
