Men’s Basketball Tops D’Youville in Non-Conference Action

Edinboro, Pa. – Freshman Evan Berger led five Scots in double-figures as the Edinboro men's basketball team scored an 87-78 victory over D'Youville Wednesday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
With 15:23 to play in the game, Renard Fontes-Jules gave D'Youville a 50-48 lead with a layup. Berger gave Edinboro the lead back with a 3-pointer at the 14:08 mark. Berger then extended the lead to 54-50 with another triple at 12:59. Daunte Wilcott closed out the 8-0 run with driving layup at 12:22 to make it 56-50 Scots.
 
Trayton Trice stopped the run with a layup, but a Ryan Ladjevich jumper started a 7-0 lead to push the Scot advantage to 63-52. Edinboro had the lead stayed steady until the 3:33 mark when the Saints trimmed the lead to 76-70 on a Jaylin Simmons layup. Berger provided the answer for the Scots hitting another 3-pointer at the 3:14 mark to make it 79-70. D'Youville scored the next five points to cut the lead to 79-75, before Wilcott completed the and-one with 45 seconds to play taking the lead back to 82-75. The Scots went 5-of-6 from the line down the stretch to ice the game.
 
The Scots jumped out to a 16-6 lead out of the gate including four 3-pointers including two by Berger. The Saints scored the next seven points trimming the lead to 16-13 at the 12:38. Edinboro went on a 13-8 spurt to push the lead out to 29-21 with 6:13 left in the half. D'Youville used an 11-3 run capped by a Dawson Mastell 3-pointer to knot the game 32-32 at the 4:12 mark.
 
Edinboro went on an 8-2 run with a pair of Michal Dunn 3-pointers sandwiching a Berger layup to take a 40-34 lead. The Saints closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 42-40 lead into the half.
 
Berger led all scorers with 22 points to go with six rebounds, an assist and a steal. He shot 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Wilcott tallied 18 points including going 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Dunn added 12 points while Cenker Evran notched his third double-double in as many games with 10 points and 11 boards. Steve Kelly added 10 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
 
Matsell led the Saints in scoring with 16 points. Simmons tallied 14 points and Justin Moore chipped in 12.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Malone at 7:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
