Women’s Basketball Scores Road Win Over Charleston

Charleston, W.Va. – The Edinboro women's basketball team had five players reach double figure scoring in a 68-55 road victory over Charleston Wednesday afternoon at the H. Bernard Wehrle Arena.
 
The Golden Eagles took their only lead of the game on the opening possession when Ksenija Mitric hit a 3-pointer. Edinboro answered back with eight straight points on a Maura Suman layup, Ashten Boggs and-one and a Hayley Sims 3-pointer. Charleston answered with a 10-7 spurt to trim the lead to 15-13 with 1:48 left in the first quarter. Morgan Gentile and Suman each hit triples before the end of the first to make it 21-13 Scots after one.
 
The teams traded baskets with Edinboro holding a 25-17 lead at the 7:19 mark after a Gentile jumper. Charleston scored the next five points to trim the advantage to 25-22 on a pair of Paris Stokes free throws with 4:45 to play in the second. Gillian Fisher capped a 5-0 spurt for the Scots at the 2:11 mark to make it 30-22. Sydney Bolles cut the lead to 20-25 with a 3-pointer, before Ava Hadad scored with 28 seconds to send the Scots into the locker room up 32-25.
 
The Scot lead grew to 11, 36-25, after the break on baskets by Gabby McDuffie and Fisher. Charleston answered back with seven straight including triples from Kiara Cruz and Mitric to cut the edge to 36-32 with 4:02 on the clock in the third. Edinboro closed out the quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 44-36 lead into the final period of play.
 
Ashten Boggs and Sims pushed the lead out to 48-36 with baskets on the Scots first two possessions of the fourth. Edinboro held the lead and were up 56-45 after a Sims 3-pointer with 3:38 to play. Charleston pushed back using a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 60-55 with 21 seconds to play. The Scots iced the game at the free throw line going 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final 15 seconds to secure the win.
 
Suman and Sims each finished the day with 13 points. Suman tallied four rebounds, and three helpers while Sims tied for the team-high with seven rebounds as well as two assists and two blocks. McDuffie also grabbed seven boards to go with 10 points. Boggs was a highly efficient 5-of-9 from the field for 11 points as well as grabbing five boards. Gentile tallied 11 points, four boards, three steals, and three assists.
 
Stokes led the Golden Eagles with 12 points and six rebounds. Cruz added 11 points.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Findlay at 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
