Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start as they dropped an 80-74 decision to visiting Findlay Saturday evening inside McComb Fieldhouse.
Morgan Gentile tied the game 5-5 four minutes into the first quarter. The Oilers scored the next five points to grab a 10-5 lead. Gabbie McDuffie hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 10-8, but Findlay closed the quarter on a 14-3 run to hold a 24-11 lead after one.
Hayley Sims opened the second quarter with a pair of 3-pointers cutting the lead to 24-17 at the 8:27 mark. Findlay answered back with a 14-4 run capped by a Kate Ellis layup to push the lead to 38-21. The Scots scored six of the last eight points of the half to trim the halftime deficit to 41-27.
Edinboro came out of the break firing off a 9-2 run to cut the led to 43-36 after a
Morgan Gentile triple at the 7:38 mark. Findlay extended the lead back to 50-40 with a pair of Taylor Stanley free throws with 3:32 left in the quarter. The Scots went on a 9-2 run to pull within 52-49 with 1:02 remaining in the third. McKenna Stephens closed out the quarter with a 3-poitner to send the Oilers to the fourth 55-49.
Alyssa Ziehler scored a layup to open the fourth making the score 57-49. Edinboro cut the lead to five multiple times in the fourth, but that was as close as they would get.
Sims paced the Edinboro offense with 20 points to go with three rebounds and a block. Gentile notched 18 points, seven assists and two rebounds. McDuffie led the Scots in rebounding with five.
The Scots are back in action on Friday when they play host to Kutztown at 3 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
