Balanced Offense and Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Women’s Basketball to Victory in PSAC Opener

Edinboro, Pa. – Five different Scots scored in double figures and the Edinboro defense held Kutztown to 31.5 percent shooting from the floor as women's basketball scored a 73-48 win over the visiting Golden Bears Friday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
Midway through the second quarter, Olivia Smelas cut the Edinboro lead to 26-24 with a jumper assisted by Naia Pulliam. The Scots answered with an 11-0 run capped by a Gabby McDuffie layup at the 1:59 mark to make it 37-24. Kutztown stopped the run with a 3-point play from Abbey Hearn, but Edinboro closed the quarter with five straight points including an and-one from McDuffie with 1 second left in the half to take a 42-27 lead into the break.
 
The Scots grew the lead to 22, 54-32, after a Natalie Angeletti jumper at the 3:47 mark of the third. The Golden Bears scored four straight points to cut the lead to 54-36, but Edinboro closed the quarter with an 8-4 spurt to push the lead back to 62-40 at the end of the third.
 
Edinboro closed out the game in the fourth holding Kutztown to just eight points and keeping the lead above 20 to the final whistle.
 
Kutztown jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but nine straight points led by five from Hayley Sims gave the Scots an 11-7 advantage. The Golden Bears retook the lead, 14-13, on a Pullima layup, but Ashten Boggs made a layup sparking a 6-0 run to give the Scots a 19-14 lead and they would never trail again.
 
Boggs led the Scots with 12 points on a highly efficient 5-of-6 from the field to go with five rebounds, a block and a steal. Ava Haddad added 11 points, four boards and a block. Maura Suman chipped in 10 points, three assists and two rebounds. Sims finished with 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a block. Rachael Manfredo also scored 10 points to go with four rebounds and a block. Morgan Gentile dished out five assists to go with five boards and three steals.
 
Pulliam led the Golden Bears with 13 points and four rebounds. Smelas was the only other Kutztown player to reach double figures with 10 points and four boards.
 
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host West Chester at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
