Volleyball Scores Five Set Win Over Pitt-Johnstown

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team rallied from a slow start to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 3-2 in PSAC West action Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Scots fell behind 13-6 in the opening set and the Mountain Cats kept the pressure on taking the first 25-14.
 
The second set started with eight straight points for Pitt-Johnstown. Erika Lindqvist and Jessica Hardin each recorded kills to stop the run. UPJ answered back with four straight points to extend the lead to 12-2. The Mountain Cats would hold a 16-6 lead, but the Scots found their footing and went on a 14-3 run to take a 20-19 lead on a Makayla Neelands service ace. Natalie Lippncott tied the set at 20, but a Lindqvist kill and Mountain Cat error put Edinboro back on top 22-20. The Scots didn't trail again in the set scoring a 25-23 win to level the match score 1-1.
 
Edinboro carried the momentum of the late run into the third jumping out to a 15-7 lead. UPJ trimmed the lead to 16-11 before the Scots rattled off five straight points en route to a 25-16 set victory.
 
The Mountain Cats got out quick in the fourth taking an 11-6 lead and kept the Scots at arm's length to win the fourth 25-19 and force a decisive fifth set.
 
UPJ scored the first point of the fifth, but Edinboro answered with four straight points. The Mountain Cats cut the lead to 5-4, but two kills from Kasey Smith extended the advantage to 7-4. The teams traded attack errors and sides of the floor with the Scots leading 8-5. Back-to-back kills from Neelands pushed the lead to 10-5. The Scot lead stayed at five, 12-7, before three straight points gave the set and the match to the Scots.
 
Neelands tallied a match-high 20 kills to go with five service aces and 17 digs. Smith tallied 14 kills and a pair of blocks while Lindqvist chipped in 11 kills and four blocks. Abigale Soboleski triggered the offense with 46 set assists to go with 14 digs.
 
The Scots return to action on Wednesday with a trip to Gannon. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
