Women’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Wayne State

Detroit, Mich. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped a 71-63 decision to host Wayne State Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Scots jumped out 4-0 on baskets by Hayley Sims and Ashten Boggs. The Warriors cut the lead to 6-5 on a Shea Tripp 3-pointer at the 8:38 mark. Over the next four minutes, Edinboro went on a 14-4 run to take a 20-9 lead capped by a Boggs basket with 4:44 to play. The Scot lead grew to 25-12 on a Sims triple at the 2:52 mark. Wayne State closed the quarter with a 5-2 spurt to trim the lead to 27-17.
 
The Edinboro offense struggled in the second half going 0-8 from the field and scoring four points at the free throw line. Defensively, the Scots held Wayne State to 5-of-12 from the field and to 13 points. Edinboro held a 31-30 advantage at the break.
 
With 5:05 left in the third quarter, Morgan Gentile scored a layup to knot the score 40-40. A layup by Shea Tripp and a 3-pointer form McKenna Ferguson put the Warriors up 45-40. The Scots answered with a bucket from Ava Haddad and a jumper by Sims trimmed the lead to 45-44. After a Lexi Boyke trey, Edinboro closed the quarter with four straight points to tie the game at 48-48.
 
The lead see-sawed back and forth with Gentile tying the game 58-58 with a layup at the 3:37 mark. Wayne State answered with a 5-1 run to take a 63-59 lead on a pair of Ferguson free throws. Haddad trimmed the lead to 63-61 with a basket. Annabel Ayrault hit a trey to push the advantage to 66-61 with 1:37 to play. A Haddad layup at the 50 second mark trimmed the lead to 66-63, but the Warriors finished the game 5-of-6 from the line to hold off the Scots.
 
Sims led the Edinboro offense with 22 points to go with two assists and two steals. Haddad added 14 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
 
Ferguson paced the Warrior offense with 19 points. Tripp added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Scots are back in action on Tuesday when they host Lock Haven inside McComb Fieldhouse. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m.
