Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Mansfield

Mansfield, Pa. – Daunte Wilcott's 3-pointer was just off the mark as the Edinboro men's basketball team had their second half comeback bid come up just short falling 73-72 to host Mansfield Saturday afternoon.
 
The Scots trailed 68-57 after the Mounties got a pair of free throws from Diarmid Stewart with 6:42 left to play. Wilcott scored an and-one on the next possession and then turned a defensive rebound into fastbreak points to cut the lead to 68-60 at the 6:01 mark. After Mansfield split a pair of free throws to push the lead to 69-62, but a Bryce Baez layup and another old-school 3-point play by Wilcott cut the lead to 69-67 with 4:45 to go.
 
Sterling Scott extended the Mountie lead to 71-67 with a bucket at the 4:23 mark. Michael Dunn connected on a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 71-70 with 3:34 to play. Scott scored again to make it 73-70. Baez scored a layup with 2:03 to play cutting the lead to 73-72 and that was the final points of the contest as Mansfield held on for the victory.
 
Mansfield got out to a 5-0 lead before a Dunn triple got the Scots on the board at 17:23. Mansfield went on a 9-4 run to push the lead to 14-7 with 13:33 left in the first half. Back-to-back treys by Steve Kelly pulled the Scots within one 14-13 at the 11:53 mark.
 
The Mounties scored five straight points to take a 19-13 advantage. Edinboro would pull back within one, 21-20, after a Ryan Ladjevich 3-pointer at the 8:56 mark. The Mounties used a 9-4 spurt to extend the lead to 30-24 with 2:45 left in the half. The Mounties took a 36-31 lead into the half.
 
The Scots pulled within four, 38-34, on a triple from Dunn at the 19:09 mark of the second half. Jayden Montgomery capped an 8-2 spurt by the Mounties pushing the lead to 46-36 with 17:16 to play. The Scots answered with six straight points after a pair of Kelly free throws at the 14:58 mark cutting the advantage to 46-42.
 
Kelly led all scorers with 19 points while also grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists. Cenker Evran recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dunn finished the game with 11 points. Baez and Wilcott each notched 10 points.
 
Sterling was the Mounties leading scorer with 16 points. Owen Chambers notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Scots return to action on Sunday with a trip to East Stroudsburg. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m.
