Mansfield, Pa. –
Morgan Gentile tallied a double-double leading the Edinboro women's basketball team to a 65-56 win on the road at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots got out to a 12-6 lead after a
Hayley Sims jumper with 3:05 left in the first quarter. The Mounties split a pair of free throws to cut the advantage to 12-7, before Edinboro closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 19-7 lead at the end of the first.
Mara Suman and Gentile scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to push the Scot lead to 23-7 at the 7:59 mark of the second quarter. Mansfield responded with an 8-2 spurt to trim the lead to 25-15 with 5:14 left in the second. The teams played even to the end of the quarter with the Scots taking a 32-21 advantage into the locker room.
The Mounties cut the lead to nine, 34-25, on a Cydney Stanton layup at the 8:57 mark of the third quarter. The Scots went on an 8-0 run with two points each for
Ava Haddad, Sims,
Ashten Boggs and Suman to take a 42-25 lead with 5:48 on the clock. The Mounties pushed back with a 9-3 spurt trimming the lead to 45-34 with 2:48 left in the third. The Scots held a 51-40 edge heading to the final quarter.
Edinboro grew the lead to 59-46 on a Boggs layup with 2:35 to play. Mansfield used a 7-2 spurt to cut the advantage to 61-53, but a Boggs layup and two Gentile free throws pushed the lead back to 65-53 with 11 seconds to play. Kristen Fulford hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to set the final.
Gentile tallied a game-high 21 points to go with 12 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and a steal. Smis chipped in 17 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Boggs added eight points and six rebounds.
Fulford led the Mounties with 16 points to go with three rebounds and three steals. Katie Sheeleer chipped in 15 points.
The Scots return to action on Sunday when they take on East Stroudsburg. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
