Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped a 66-56 decision to California (PA) Saturday afternoon in the PSAC West regular season finale for both teams.
The Scots held a 32-27 advantage at the half, but Cal scored the first seven points of the third grabbing a 34-32 lead on an Alicia Young jumper at the 5:02 mark.
Hayley Sims gave the Scots the lead back with a triple at the 3:54 mark, but four Young free throws gave the Vulcans a 38-35 advantage.
Morgan Gentile knotted the game at 38 with a 3-pointer of her own with 2:10 to play, but Cal scored the final five points of the quarter to go up 43-38 after three.
Cal carried that momentum into the fourth scoring the first nine points of the frame to take a 52-38 lead on a Dejah Terrell trey at the 8:25 mark. Edinboro clawed back and cut the lead to nine, 54-45, with a 7-2 spurt capped by a jumper by Gentile at the 5:03 mark. The Scots got as close as eight twice in the fourth but couldn't break through as the Vulcans held on for the win.
The Scots came out of the gate firing building a 13-3 after
Ashten Boggs completed an and-one play with 5:39 left in the first quarter. Cal answered with five straight to cut the lead to 13-8 at the 4:54 mark. Gentile and Mullen each made buckets sandwiching a Nina Shaw jumper to give the Scots a 17-10 advantage. Cal connected on a pair of free throws and a Shaw jumper to cut the advantage to 17-14 after one.
Talia Gilliard tied the game with a 3-pointer to open the second and the lead see-sawed back and forth with Vulcans holding a 23-21 advantage after a Young bucket with 6:45 on the clock. Edinboro answered with a 9-0 run paced by five points from Gentile to take a 30-23 lead with 3:26 showing on the clock. Cal outscored the Scots 4-2 in the final minutes cutting the Edinboro halftime lead to 32-27.
Gentile led all scorers with 25 points to go with four assists, three blocks and two rebounds. Sims added 10 points and two boards while
Gillian Fisher notched nine rebounds and seven points.
Young led the Vulcans in scoring with 18 points. Sierra Bermudez add 14 off the bench while Allycia Harris pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds.
