Edinboro, Pa. – Julia Buchman's last second 3-pointer came off the front of the rim as time expired as the Edinboro women's basketball team held on for a 63-62 victory over Mercyhurst Monday night in the Opening Round of the PSAC Women's Basketball Championship inside McComb Fieldhouse.
With the Scots trailing 58-56,
Maura Suman scored on a turn around jumper to knot the score 58-58 with 3:54 to play. Edinboro got a stop on a missed trey by Grace Clary and took the lead on a
Hayley Sims triple at the 3:06 mark.
Ashten Boggs extended the lead with a layup at 1:58 on a put back form a Sims miss.
Danielle Grim scored four straight to cut the Scot lead to 63-62 and after two missed Edinboro free throws the Scot defense came up with a last second stop to secure the win.
The Scots trailed by four, 55-51, with 7:08 on the clock in the fourth. Sims hit a 3-pointer trimming the lead to one before Buchman split a pair of free throws making it 56-54 Lakers.
Gillian Fisher tied the game with two free throws of her own at the 5:27 mark.
The Scots got out to a four point lead twice early in the first, but strong long range shooting from Mercyhurst gave the Lakers a 15-14 advantage at the 2:29 mark of the opening frame. Sims and
Morgan Gentile scored the next four points to put Edinboro up 18-15. Mercyhurst came back with the final eight points of the quarter including five from Danielle Grim.
Mercyhurst extended the lead to 28-22 after a Grim jumper with 7:52 remaining in the second. The Scots went on an 11-4 run capped by a
Lauren Mullen bucket with 2:09 on the clock. Allyson Ross gave the Lakers the lead back with a layup at the 1:42 mark, but a
Gillian Fisher 3-pointer and
Ava Haddad free throw sent the Scots into the locker room up 37-34.
Fisher opened the scoring in the third with a trey, but Mercyhurst went on a 7-1 spurt tying the game at 41-41 on a Clary 3-pointer at the 6:30 mark. The lead changed hands four times as well as two ties over the final 3:30 and the Lakers held a one-point lead, 51-50, heading to the final frame.
Fisher filled the stat sheet with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds to go with two steals, two blocks and an assist. Sims also tallied 14 points as well as five boards and two steals. Boggs finished the game with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.
Grim led the Lakers with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Buchman added 11 points and Allyson Ross finished with 10.
The Scots advance to the PSAC Quarterfinals where they will travel to the Haggerty Events Center to take on top-seeded Gannon. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and all tickets are to be purchased in the PSAC online ticketing platform, found by clicking
