Petersburg, Va. – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team battled to the final whistle but came out on the wrong end of a 10-9 final score against host Virginia State on Thursday.
Jaqui Detelich gave the Scots the lead at the 11:05 mark of the fourth when she scored on a pass from
Rylee Jones. The Trojans answered with a goal from Adriana Davis with 10:11 to play knotting the score at 8-8.
Jhalin Hooks scored back-to-back goals just nine seconds apart to put the Trojans ahead 10-8.
Traci Culver pulled the Scots within one, 10-9, with 27 seconds remaining, but the Scots couldn't find the equalizer before time expired.
Culver opened the scoring with an unassisted tally just 23 seconds into the contest. Virginia State answered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 7:52 remaining in the first. Jones scored with 3:17 left in the opening period to cut the deficit to 3-2 after one.
Angelina Anderson tied the score at 11:19 of the second quarter. Grace Hall gave the Trojans the lead back with a goal at the 6:44 mark. Olivia Kaminisky tied the game up before the half scoring on a Ryle Jones pass with 3:48 remaining in the second.
Anderson put the Scots ahead in the third assisted by Culver. Hooks cut the lead to one just two minutes later before Culver restored the two goal lead with 6:31 showing on the clock in the third. It would be Hooks again that trimmed the lead to one with a player advantage goal before the end of the third.
Culver tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Jones also tallied five points with one goal and four helpers. Detelich and Anderson each notched a pair of goals.
Addy Ours made seven saves and took the loss in the cage.
Hooks paced the Trojans with five goals while Hall tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Callie Thompson picked up the win in net making five saves.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. inside Sox Harrison Stadium.
