Volleyball Opens the Season with Pair of Victories

Shepherdstown, W.Va. – The Edinboro volleyball team scored a pair of victories on the opening day of the Ram Rumble Friday.
 
The Scots opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Glenville State before sweeping past Bowie State 3-0.
 
In the opener, Edinboro fell behind 5-0 in the first set. The Scots rallied to knot the score at 9-9 on a service ace by Makayla Neelands. The Pioneers scored the next point, but the Scots scored three straight points on kills from Jessica Hardin, Rita Campos and a service ace from Kasey Smith. After Sadie Hill cut the Scot lead to 14-13, Edinboro went on a 7-1 run on their way to a 25-17 first set win.
 
Glenville State took the second 25-14. With the scored tied 12-12 in the third, the Scots scored five straight points sparking an 11-2 run enroute to a 25-17 set win. In the fourth, Edinboro jumped out to a 13-4 lead and closed out the match at 25-11.
 
Neelands led the offense with 17 kills to go with two service aces, and two solo blocks. She also picked up seven digs and three assists. Hardin added nine kills and three service aces. Erika Lindqvist chipped in eight kills and two blocks.
 
Abigale Soboleski triggered the offense with 16 assists to go with five digs. Laney Burns added 14 assists and seven digs. Carly Pry added a team-high nine digs.
 
In the second contest, Edinboro jumped out on Bowie State 17-7 in the first set. The Scots took the opening frame 25-13. The Bulldogs scored the first two points of the second, but Edinboro rallied to take an 11-8 lead. The Scots closed out the set with a 14-2 run to take the set 25-10. Edinboro completed the sweep with a 25-17 third set win.
 
Neelands again led the offensive effort with 17 kills on 25 swings to go with four aces and one block. Hardin and Lindqvist each added six kills. Soboleski notched 21 assists while Burns added 12 helpers. Hardin also led the team's defensive effort with nine digs.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday. Edinboro takes on Mars Hill at 11 a.m. and closes out the Ram Rumble against host Shepherd at 3 p.m.
