Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team held No. 9 Gannon to 17-of-64 shooting from the field in a 62-45 victory Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Bri Claxon triple and a pair of layups from Jordan Popyk and Maddy Wheatley. Edinboro answered with a 15-0 run keyed by eight points including a pair of 3-pointers from
Hayley Sims to take a 15-7 lead with 5:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
Wheatly broke the scoreless drought for Gannon, before the Sims split a pair of free throws and made a pull up jumper sandwiching a pair of
Ashten Boggs free throws to extend the first quarter lead to 20-9 with 2:37 on the clock. Andrea Maibach hit a trey to cut the lead to 20-12, but the Scots finished the quarter on 5-0 spurt to take a 25-12 lead into the second.
The Scots carried the momentum into the second quarter scoring the first seven points on a
Morgan Gentile 3-pointer and layups from Sims and
Gabby McDuffie extending the lead to 32-12. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle with Gannon outscoring the Scots 8-4 to trim the halftime deficit to 36-20.
Gannon scored first in the third on a Wheatley layup to pull within 36-22 with 9:48 left in the third. Four points from
Ava Haddad and two from Boggs pushed the Edinboro lead back to 20, 42-22, with 7:36 on the clock. The Golden Knights trimmed the lead to 46-32 with a 10-4 spurt capped by a Wheatley layup with 1:01 to play in the third. Sims hit a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter to make it 48-32 after three.
In the fourth, Gannon was able to cut the lead to 12 several times the latest at the 5:48 mark after a Claxon jumper, but an 8-0 run capped by a
Morgan Gentile layup pushed the lead back to 20 with 2:06 to play and sealed the Scots first victory over Gannon since February of 2020.
The Scots outrebounded Gannon 53-32 led by 10 boards from Haddad and nine from Gentile. Edinboro was also highly efficient from the charity stripe making 20-of-22 attempts from the line.
Sims led the Edinboro offense with 22 points to go with eight rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Boggs notched 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. In addition to her 10 boards, Haddad finished with eight points.
Carissa Dunham was the only Golden Knight to reach double figures scoring 13 points.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Bryant & Stratton College in non-conference action. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
