Sims Late Layup Lifts Women’s Basketball Past Cal and Delivers Wheeler Win No. 100

Edinboro, Pa. – Hayley Sims gave Edinboro the lead with a left-hand layup with 21 seconds to play and the Edinboro defense made the bucket stand up delivering Callie Wheeler her 100th career victory as the Fighting Scot head coach 80-79 over visiting California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.
 
Wheeler becomes the third head coach in Edinboro women's basketball history to reach 100 wins at Edinboro joining Judy Saurer and Stan Swank. Wheeler is now 100-60 in her career as a head coach all with the Fighting Scots.
 
Trailing 79-78 after an Iyahnna Williams bucket with 43 seconds left, the Scots called timeout to advance the basketball into the front court. Sims took the ball at the top of the key and beat the Vulcan defender to the left finishing at the rim with her left hand to make it 80-79 with 21.7 showing on the clock. On the ensuing possession, Williams took a step-back jumper 5.5 seconds that came off the front of the rim and time ran out during the rebound scramble to secure the win for the Scots.
 
Gabby McDuffie put the Scots ahead 72-66 with 4:20 to play. Cal scored the next six points to tie the game 72-72 with 2:51 remaining. Morgan Gentile gave Edinboro the lead back 74-72 and Williams knotted the score with a layup at the 1:46 mark. Sims continued the seesaw with a floater on the baseline to put the Scots ahead 76-74 with 1:31 on the clock. Williams hit a triple to put Cal up 77-76 and a pair of Gentile free throws put Edinboro back on top 78-77 with 56 seconds remaining.
 
The Scots held a 59-58 lead after three. Sierra Bermudez hit a jumper on Cal's opening possession of the fourth quarter sparking a 6-0 run to make it 64-59 Vulcans with 8:23 to play. Edinboro responded with a 13-7 run taking a 72-66 lead on the McDuffie layup.
 
Cal held a 40-35 lead at the half and extended that lead to 48-41 on a Williams layup with 6:08 on the clock in the third. Sims and Gentile each hit 3-pointers as part of an 8-2 Edinboro run cutting the lead to 50-49 at the 4:22 mark. Back-to-back buckets by Alicia Young and Talia Gilliard pushed the Vulcan advantage to 54-49. Edinboro answered back with six straight points, four from Rachael Manfredo and two from Ava Haddad, to pull ahead 55-54 with 2:13 left in the third.
 
Bermudez gave Cal the lead back with a layup at the 2:01 mark, but layups by Gentile and Manfredo put Edinboro back in the lead 59-56. Kimaya Williams hit a pair of free throws to cut the Scot lead to 59-58 heading to the final quarter.
 
Edinboro found themselves down 5-0 out of the gate after a Gilliard triple and Iyahnna Williams layup. The Scots cut the lead to one, 9-8, on a Haddad free throw with 3:17 on the clock. The Vulcans closed out the first on 15-6 run taking a 24-14 lead into the second quarter.
 
Alivia Huffman pushed the lead to 26-14 with a basket to open the second quarter. Edinboro responded with a 14- 3 run keyed by seven points from Haddad to trim the lead to 29-28 at the 5:12 mark. Cal scored the next points to grow the advantage to 38-28 capped by a Young layup with 3:18 until the half. The Scots closed the half with a 7-2 spurt to trim the halftime deficit to 40-35.
 
Manfredo paced the Scots with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds while also blocking five shots and dishing out four assists. Gentile tallied 18 points, eight helpers, two boards and two blocks. Haddad added 17 points and three assists. Sims scored 13 points to go with two rebounds, two assists and a block. McDuffie was the fifth Scot to finish in double figure scoring with 10 points as well as eight rebounds.
 
Allycia Harris led the Cal offense with 18 points. Young added 16 while Gilliard and Iyahnna Williams each notched 13.
 
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Slippery Rock. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
