Clarion, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored a 70-61 victory over host Clarion Friday night inside Tippin Gymnasium.
In the first quarter, Edinboro held a 12-4 lead after
Morgan Gentile hit a 3-pointer with 5:57 on the clock. Autumn Taylor scored five straight points for the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to 12-9 with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Fighting Scot defense stifled Clarion for the rest of the quarter holding the Golden Eagles without a point closing the opening frame on an 8-0 run to hold a 20-9 advantage.
Edinboro grew the lead to 30-15 on a
Hayley Sims triple with 4:19 on the clock in the second quarter. Zoe Guice hit a layup for Clarion and Gentile notched a pair of free throws to keep the lead at 15, 32-17. Clarion finished the half on an 8-2 spurt to trim the halftime deficit to 34-25.
In the second half, the Scots opened up with an 11-5 run to take a 45-30 lead after an
Ashten Boggs bucket at the 5:09 mark. Clarion trimmed the lead to 45-33 on a Taylor layup, but Edinboro responded with five straight points to extend the advantage to 50-33 with 3:12 left in the third. Guice hit a pair of free throws for the Golden Eagles before Edinboro scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 57-35 lead into the final frame.
Clarion pushed back in the fourth cutting the lead to 65-56 on an Arianna Seitz tip-in with 1:57 to play. A pair of Gentile free throws pushed the lead back to 11, 67-56, at the 1:30 mark. The lead didn't fall below eight in the final minute with the Scots taking the 70-61 victory.
Gentile paced the Edinboro offense with 24 points to go with three steals, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Sims added 18 points as well as 3 boards and two helpers. Boggs matched her career-high in rebounds pulling down 13 and just missing a double-double with nine points and five steals.
Guice led the Clarion offense with 14 points. Sietz tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Scots return to action on Monday when they play host to IUP at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
