Women’s Basketball Falls to IUP Monday

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped an 83-70 decision to visiting IUP Monday afternoon in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Scots got out to a 6-5 lead early in the first quarter after a Hayley Sims layup at the 7:02 mark. Buckets by Janeira Scott and NyShae' Weaver put the Crimson Hawks ahead 9-6 with 5:35 on the clock. Sims cut the lead back to one, 9-8, with a pullup jumper at the 5:20 mark. IUP closed out the first quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 22-10 lead after one.
 
Edinboro responded in the second quarter opening the frame on an 8-0 run on triples by Gabby McDuffie and Sims and an Ava Haddad layup to cut the lead to 22-18 with 5:47 left in the second quarter. The Crimson Hawks pushed the lead back to seven, 27-20, after an and-one from Weaver with 4:20 on the clock. The Scots went on a 10-2 run keyed by five points off the bench from Rachael Manfredo to retake the lead 30-29 with 2:02 remaining in the second. IUP scored the final five points of the half to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
 
The Crimson Hawks opened the scoring in the third with an and-one from Weaver. Maura Suman and Natalie Angeletti scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 37-34. IUP answered with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 46-36 with 5:03 remaining in the third. The Scots pulled within four, 54-50, on an Angeletti jumper with 1:25 on the clock and Shamia Strayhorn gave IUP a 56-50 lead heading to the final quarter with a late basket.
 
In the fourth, Ashten Boggs pulled the Scots within five 68-63, with a layup with 5:11 remaining, but six straight from the Crimson Hawks extended the lead to 74-63 with 4:03 to play. Morgan Gentile scored five straight points to trim the lead to 74-68 with 1:49 to play. IUP closed out the game on a 6-2 run to earn the win.
 
Sims led the Edinboro offense with 17 points to go with a pair of steals. Haddad added 14 points, three boards and two assists. Gentile finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Angeletti also scored in double figures with 10 points as well as pulling down seven rebounds.
 
Weaver paced the Crimson Hawks with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Ellie Wilkerson tallied 15 points while Strayhorn finished with 14.
 
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
