Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team rallied for a 94-93 win over visiting Clarion Friday night in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
Trailing 85-84 with 3:31 to play,
Steve Kelly hit a 3-pointer and then Kelly added a pair of free throws to put the Scots ahead 89-85 with 2:05 to play.
Evan Berger split a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 90-85 with 18 seconds left. Trey Nelson cut the lead to 90-87 with a layup at the 13 second mark. Kelly drained a pair of free throws to push the lead back tout to 92-87. Cam Kearney kept Clarion alive with a 3-pointer at the 4 second mark, but
Cenker Evran went 2-of-2 at the stripe before a Kearney three at the buzzer set the final.
The teams were even at the break 46-46 and each team came out and hit a trey on their first possession of the second half with
Bryce Baez connecting for the Scots and Kearney for the Golden Eagles. Edinboro went on an 8-5 spurt to take a 54-51 lead on a pair of Evran free throws at the 16:48 mark. The teams went back and forth with the Scots pushing the lead to 66-61 on a Kelly trey with 13:10 to play in the game.
Clarion responded with a 9-0 run to grab a 70-66 advantage with 10:55 remaining. A
Ryan Ladjevich 3-pointer and pair of Evran free throws put the Scots back on ahead 71-70 at the 10:05 mark. Gavin Cote hit a trey and Josiah Dow added a dunk to put the Golden Eagles back on top 75-71 with 9:05 showing on the clock.
The Scots came back with a 13-5 run capped by an
Evan Berger 3-pointer to take an 84-80 advantage with 4:22 to play. Justice Easter hit a 3-pointer and two Trey Nelson free throws gave Clarion the lead 85-84 with 3:31 remaining.
Edinboro found themselves down early after Nelson hit a triple at the 14:44 mark to make it 19-8. The Scot battled back with a 10-2 run trimming the lead to 21-18 on a Berger trey with 11:09 left in the first half. Clarion pushed the lead back out to nine, 34-27, with 7:29 to go on a Kendon Peebles basket. Berger scored five straight points sparking a 13-2 run to saw Edinboro take a 40-36 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first.
Traden Gray hit a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to 40-39, but a Baez free throw and Berger trey extended the lead to 44-39 at the 2:06 mark. Clarion closed the half on a 7-2 run to knot the score 46-46 at the half.
Berger paced the Edinboro offense with 26 points including shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. He also tallied five rebounds and three steals. Ladjevich finished the night with 16 points and three assists. Evran tallied 15 points and eight rebounds while Kelly chipped 15 points and five helpers. Baez was the fifth Scot to score in double figures with 12 points to go with five rebounds and two assists.
Kearney led the Golden Eagles with 26 points and six boards. Nelson and Cote each had 16 points while Peebles tallied 10.
The Scots return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Gannon for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff with the Golden Knights.
