Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Pitt-Johnstown

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's volleyball team fell 3-2 to Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC West action Friday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
In the first set, Natalie Lippincott put UPJ up 8-4 with a kill. Kills by Makayla Neelands and Faith Schneider keyed a 4-1 run to pull the Scots within 9-8. After a Mallory Pinske kill the Mountain Cats held a 14-11 lead. Three straight kills from Neelands leveled the score at 14-14. UPJ retook the lead 18-16 on a kill by Lippincott. Kills from Maggie Koster and Reilly Parent and a UPJ error put Edinboro up 19-18. The Mountain Cats closed out the set on a 7-2 run to claim a 25-21 set win.
 
The Scots trailed 11-10 in the second. Kills from Koster and Parent were part of a 6-0 run to give Edinboro a 16-11 lead. The Mountain Cats used a 5-1 spurt of their own to cut the lead to 17-16. Faith Schneider extended the lead to 20-17 with a kill. UPJ tied the score at 21-21 after a Fighting Scot error. A pair of Schneider service aces pushed the lead to 24-21. Parent tallied a kill to close out the set 25-22.
 
In the third, Edinboro got out to a 9-5 lead after Neelands service ace. UPJ pulled within one, 11-10, on an Ellie Zuro Cirino kill. The Scots scored three straight including kills by Parent and Klaresajane Sivas to go up 14-10. The Mountain Cats cut the lead to 15-13, but four straight points from the Scots including a pair of Laney Burns service aces gave the Scots a 19-13 lead and they would close out the set 25-18.
 
Edinboro raced out to a 7-1 in the fourth set. UPJ responded with seven straight points capped by a Cirino kill to take an 8-7 lead. The Scots responded with a 6-3 spurt to take a 13-10 lead. Edinboro kept the lead at three, 17-14 after kills from Parent and Koster. UPJ scored the next four points to take an 18-17 lead. Parent tied the match with a kill, but a 5-1 spurt for UPJ made it 23-19. A service error cut the lead to 23-20, but a kill from Caroline Knight and a Jessica Krug service ace made it 25-20 and forced a decisive fifth set.
 
UPJ got out to an 8-5 lead at the switch in the fifth. Back-to-back kills from Knight extended the lead to 10-5. A pair of UPJ errors trimmed the lead to 10-7, but a 5-1 spurt gave UPJ the 15-8 win in the fifth.
 
Neelands led the Edinboro offense with 14 kills. Parent tallied 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs. Burns tallied five service aces and 20 helpers. Grace Petro added 22 assists. Koster tallied five blocks and Schneider added four.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host IUP at 4 p.m.
