Men’s Basketball Falls to Fairmont State on Second Day of Joe Retton Classic

Fairmont, W.Va. – The Edinboro men's basketball team dropped an 82-75 decision to host Fairmont State on the second day of the Joe Retton Classic.
 
The Scots held a 33-32 lead at the half. Amaan Sandhu extended the lead to 35-32 with a layup on the first possession of the second half. The Falcons hit a jumper and Bryce Baez answered with a layup to put the Scots up 37-34. Fairmont State went on a 9-0 run capped by a Miguel Martinez to take a 43-37 lead. Sandhu trimmed the lead to 43-39 with a layup at the 16:29 mark.
 
The Falcons extended the lead to 54-43 at the 13:22 mark of the second half on a Joey Brown triple. Rowan Carmichael hit a layup to pull the Scots within 54-45, but nine straight points for Fairmont State extended the lead to 63-45 with 10:47 left to play.
 
Edinboro fought back using a 15-7 spurt capped by a Sandhu tip-in cutting the lead to 67-60 with 5:39 to play. The Falcons scored the next seven points to push the advantage to 74-60 with 3:55 remaining in the contest. At the 1:09 mark, Carmichael connected on a 3-pointer to pull Edinboro back within 78-70. Martinez hit a free throw to extend the lead to 80-70. Mekhi Reynolds hit a jumper and then a trey at 9 seconds  to cut the lead to 80-75. Martinez hit a pair of free throws to set the final at 82-75.
 
In the first half, Evan Berger hit a layup at the 16:02 mark to put the Scots up 7-2. Rene Diop made a jumper to trim the lead to 7-4. Sandhu completed an old-school 3-point play to push the lead to 10-4.
 
Fairmont State answered with a 10-0 run of their own to pull ahead 14-10 with 11:36 remaining in the first half. Edinboro trimmed the lead to 16-15 after a pair of Bryce Baez free throws. The Falcons extended the lead to 22-15 on three Tyheil Peterson free throws with 9:05 to play in the first. The Scots retook the lead on a Carmichael 3-pointer that capped a 12-3 run at the 3:42 mark. David Jolinder hit a layup to tie the game. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth before Sandhu hit a triple to give the Scots a 33-32 halftime lead.
 
Baez paced the Scots going for 15 points and eight rebounds. Sandhu tallied 15 points and three boards. Reynolds chipped in 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Carmichael tallied 12 points and four rebounds. Berger was the fifth Scot to score in double figures with 11.
 
Martinez tallied 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Falcons. Peterson added 14 points.
 
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Point Park at 7 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
