Women’s Basketball Scores Non-Conference Win Over Allegheny

Meadville, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team earned a 68-59 victory over Allegheny in non-conference action Friday night.
 
The Scots got out to an early lead with Ava Haddad scoring layups on the first two Edinboro possessions. The Gators cut the lead to 6-3 at the 5:41 mark of the first quarter before the Scots answered with a 9-4 spurt capped by a Haddad layup at 2:46 to push the advantage to 15-7. Jess Bickart hit a triple for Allegheny to trim the lead to 17-12 at the 1:52 mark. Edinboro closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 24-14 lead into the second.
 
The Scot advantage grew to 28-14 after buckets from Carmen Vasquez and Haddad to open the second frame. Allegheny closed the gap to single digits, 33-49, on a Eyra Co trey at the 3:13. Bailie Brinson scored on a put back with 2:32 to play and the teams would go scoreless after that into halftime with the Scots holding a 35-24 edge.
 
Edinboro came out of the second half gate hot going on an 8-2 run keyed by five points from Rachael Manfredo to push the lead to 43-26 with 6:28 left in the third. The Gators responded with 16-4 run of their own to trim the Scot advantage to 47-42 with 2:02 on the clock. A Hope Garrity layup and Sarah Santicola free throw sent Edinboro to the fourth leading 49-46.
 
The fourth quarter opened with Manfredo scoring a layup and pair of free throws to extend the Edinboro lead to 53-43 at the 8:46 mark. Allegheny cut the lead to 58-52 on an Ava Kobus layup with 2:49 to play. Garrity and Manfredo each scored layups and the Scots held off the Gators with strong free throw shooting down the stretch.
 
Haddad paced the Scots with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with four steals. Manfredo added 17 points, eight boards and two steals. Taylor Blunt also reached double figure scoring with 11 points while also pulling down nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
 
Co led the Gators with 17 points and eight rebounds. Bickart added 13 points.
 
The Scots return to action on Tuesday when they host Millersville at 3 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
