Women’s Basketball Scores Overtime Victory Over Millersville

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team outlasted visiting Millersville 65-62 in overtime Tuesday night in PSAC action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Scots trailed 60-59 after a Bryn Zentner tip-in with 1:05 remaining in the extra frame. Kassie Potts hit a trey in the corner to give Edinboro a 62-60 lead with 47 seconds left. After a review, Ava Haddad was assessed a flagrant foul, sending Holly Gohl to line where she split a pair of free throws, cutting the advantage to 62-61. The Scots got a defensive stop and Hope Garrity split a pair of free throws to make it 63-61 with 11 seconds left. Ryhan Mitchell went to the line with a chance to tie the game with 4 seconds to play. She made the first but missed the second and Carmen Vasquez pulled down the rebound and two free throws at the other end to seal the victory for the Scots.
 
It was a defensive battle early with Edinboro building an 8-4 lead on a Haddad 3-pointer at the 5:59 mark of the first quarter. The Marauders scored the next four points to knot the score 8-8 at the 3:55 mark. Edinboro closed the quarter with eight straight points to build a 16-8 lead after one.
 
The Scots carried the momentum into the second with a pair of Rachael Manfredo layups to extend the Edinboro lead to 20-8 at the 7:27 mark. Millersville cut the lead to 22-14 on a pair of Daniella Ranieli free throws with 3:34 to play. Blunt hit a trey on the next possession to push the lead to 25-14. Mitchell hit a free throw to trim the lead to 25-15. Vasquez hit a pair of layups sandwiching a Marauder free throw to give Edinboro a 29-16 lead heading to the half.
 
Manfredo made the lead 31-17 with 8:41 on the clock in the third with a jumper from the elbow. Millersville answered with an 11-0 run trimming the lead to 31-28 on a pair of Aniya Eberhart free throws with 4:26 left in the third. Vasquez hit a layup at 3:44 and Blunt made a layup and made a free throw to push the Scot lead to 36-28 with 2:22 remaining in the third. Millersville scored five straight points to trim the lead to 36-33 with 1:31 on the clock. Vasquez finished the quarter with an and-one to send the Scots into the fourth up 39-33.
 
The Edinboro lead grew to nine, 48-39, after a Vasquez layup at the 5:41 mark of the fourth. Eberhart made a layup and Ranieli a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 48-44 with 4:34 to play. Haddad and Vasquez each scored layups to push the lead out to 52-44 at the 3:04 mark. The Marauders closed the fourth on a 9-1 run to force overtime.
 
Vasquez notched a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Blunt added 17 points and nine boards to go with two assists, one block and one steal. Manfredo finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Haddad also reached double figures with 12 points.
 
Ranieli led the Marauders with 12 points and three rebounds. Mitchell added 11 points and nine boards.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Shepherd for a 1 p.m. tip with the Rams.
