Shippensburg, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team built an early lead and never looked back scoring an 84-53 victory over Shippensburg Sunday in PSAC crossover action.
Shippensburg took a 3-2 lead on the games second possession on a Melana Eyer 3-pointer. The Scots scored the next nine points led by six points from
Ava Haddad taking an 11-3 advantage at the 7:06 mark of the first. The Raiders went on a 6-2 spurt of their own to trim the lead to 13-9 with 5:52 left in the first.
The Scot lead hovered moving to seven, 18-11, after Kiara Hardy split a pair of free throws at 3:26. Edinboro locked down defensively holding the Raiders scoreless over the final 3:26 of the opening quarter while scoring 10 points with
Taylor Blunt scoring five of those to take a 28-11 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, Shippensburg hit a trey to start the scoring, before
Hope Garrity scored a pair of buckets and Haddad a layup to extend the Scot lead to 34-14 with 7:47 on the clock. After a Hardy layup, Edinboro went on another run scoring 15 straight points to go ahead 49-16 with 2:19 left in the second. The Scots took a 55-23 into the break.
The Scot lead never fell below 27 in the second half as Edinboro held the Raiders to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field for the game and forced 18 Shippensburg turnovers.
Blunt paced the Edinboro offense with 22 points. She also notched two assists, one rebound and one steal.
Rachael Manfredo came up just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Haddad also reached double-figure scoring with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, four helpers, two blocks and two steals.
Eyers scored 18 for the Raiders while grabbing five rebounds. Lauren Marton also scored 18 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
The Scots return to action on Jan. 2 when they play host to Mansfield at 3 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
