Lock Haven, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored a 70-62 road victory over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in their PSAC opener.
Lock Haven trimmed the Edinboro lead to 53-51 after an Alana Robinson layup at the 4:13 mark.
Rachael Manfredo hit a layup pushing the lead to 55-51. After a Bald Eagle free throw,
Hope Garrity connected on a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 58-52. Garrity hit a pair of free throws and
Ava Haddad made a layup to push the lead to 62-52 with 1:51 to play. The lead grew to 11, 67-56, on a pair of
Kassie Potts free throws with 31 seconds to play. The Scots iced the game with solid free throw shooting the rest of the way.
The game was back-and-forth early with Lock Haven holding a 10-6 edge at the 6:29 mark of the first quarter. The Scots responded with a 7-2 spurt capped by a
Taylor Blunt and-one to take a 13-12 lead with 2:56 left in the opening quarter. Sydney Lear gave Lock Haven a 14-13 lead at the 1:45 mark. Blunt hit a 3-pointer to send Edinboro to the second quarter with a 16-14 advantage.
The Scots scored the first three points of the second quarter taking a 19-15 lead on a Haddad layup. Lock Haven responded with an 8-4 spurt to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:08 remaining in the second. Manfredo split a pair of free throws and Potts drilled a triple to push the lead to 27-23. A Julia Whesper free throw cut the lead to 27-24 before Haddad hit a layup to give the Scots a 29-24 advantage at the break.
The second half started with a 7-4 spurt to extend the lead to 36-28 with 7:45 on the clock. After two Bald Eagle free throws,
Maura Suman hit a jumper and Blunt made a free throw to make the score 40-30 with 5:11 left in the third. The Edinboro lead grew to 12, 44-32, after a Blunt layup. Lock Haven finished the third quarter with eight straight points to cut the lead to 44-40 heading to the fourth.
In the fourth, a Haddad layup and Suman free throw made it 47-40 a minute into the final frame. Lock Haven cut the lead to 49-46 with 6:09 remaining.
Samantha Baker hit a jumper and Garrity a pair of free throws to give Edinboro a 53-46 advantage.
The Scots had four players in double figures led by 14 from Haddad. She also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Manfredo notched 12 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Garrity also tallied 12 points while Blunt tallied 11.
Madaline Evans paced the Bald Eagles with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Robinson also notched 17 points. Jenadia Jordan added 12 points and 11 boards.
The Scots return to action next Saturday when they travel to Allegheny for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
