Women’s Basketball Drops Overtime Decision to IUP

Indiana, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team fell 76-72 in overtime to host IUP Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action inside the Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Center.
 
Edinboro didn't trail in regulation holding a 61-56 lead with 2:10 to play after a pair of Ava Haddad free throws. Shamia Strayhorn cut the lead to 61-58 with a jumper at the 1:50 mark. Ellie Wilkerson hit a triple with 1:14 left to knot the score 61-61. Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but the final 1:14 came off the clock sending the game to overtime.
 
In the extra period, the Crimson Hawks scored the first five points capped by an Ellie Wilkerson and-one to build a 66-61 lead with 3:41 to play. Morgan Gentile broke the run with a pair of free throws at the 1:35 mark to trim the lead to 66-63. Janeira Scott hit a try on the next IUP possession to push the lead back to 69-63. Scott extended the lead to 71-63 with a pair of free throws before Hayley Sims and Ashten Boggs hit 3-pointers sandwiching a Scott free throw to cut the lead to 72-69 with 17 seconds left. Scott hit one free throw to push the lead to 73-69. Morgan Gentile hit a layup to cut the lead to two, but the Crimson Hawks finished the game 3-of-4 from the line to hold off the Scots for a 76-72 win.
 
The Scots jumped out early opening the game on a 13-4 run capped by a Gabby McDuffie 3-pointer with 5:28 remaining in the first quarter. IUP scored the next four points to trim the lea to 13-8 on a Strayhorn layup with 3:53 on the clock. Sims and Gentile each scored buckets to extend the lead to 17-8 before Strayhorn hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 17-11 Edinboro at the end of the first.
 
Edinboro started the second quarter fast as well with a Boggs layup and McDuffie trey to go up 22-11 at the 8:30 mark. The Crimson Hawks used a 10-6 run to cut the lead to 28-21 Edinboro with 4:20 left in the second quarter. Rachael Manfredo put the Scots back up 10, 31-21, with a layup at the 2:22 mark, but IUP closed the half with five straight points to cut the halftime deficit to 31-26.
 
The Scots extended the lead to 37-28 with a 6-2 spurt to open the third quarter. Nyshae' Weaver trimmed the lead to 35-28 with a layup at the 7:52 mark. Edinboro went on an 11-2 capped by a Boggs layup to extend the lead to 46-30 with 3:54 remaining in the third. IUP closed the third on a 10-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 48-40 heading to the final frame.
 
A jumper by Sims and a layup by McDuffie pushed the Edinboro lead to 52-40 to open the fourth quarter. IUP responded with a 16-7 run to cut the lead to 59-56 on a Marin Miller 3-pointer with 2:33 to play.
 
McDuffie scored 18 points including shooting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also pulled down eight rebounds and tallied a pair of blocks. Gentile also notched 18 points, eight rebounds and six helpers. Sims tallied 15 points and became just the eighth player in Edinboro history to reach the 1,500-point plateau.
 
Strayhorn paced the Crimson Hawks with 23 points. Weaver added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Wilkerson chipped in 14 points.
 
The Scots are back in action next Saturday when they host Seton Hill at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
