Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team jumped out early and pulled away from No. 11 Seton Hill with an 82-66 on Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Griffins took their only lead of the game on the contests opening basket by Mia Kalich.
Rachael Manfredo tied the game 2-2 with a layup at the 8:59 mark of the first sparking a 14-0 run that ended with a
Gabby McDuffie 3-pointer at the 6:28 mark making it 14-2 Scots.
Kalich hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 16-4 before
Ashten Boggs split a pair of free throws and Manfredo hit a jumper to make it 19-4 with 3:57 left in the first. Seton Hill closed the first quarter with a 9-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 21-13 after the first.
In the second quarter, the Edinboro lead grew to 10, 27-17, on a Manfredo layup at the 7:35 mark. Seton Hill answered countered with a 12-3 run capped by a pair of Emma Fischer free throws at the 3:44 mark to cut the lead to 32-29.
Hayley Sims and
Ava Haddad each hit a layup on either side of a Helene Cowan layup to make it 36-30 Edinboro with 1:49 to play in the first half. Shaye Bailey hit a layup for the Griffins and Boggs closed out the scoring in the second with a pair of free throws to make the score 38-32 Scots at the half.
Edinboro opened the second half with a 7-2 spurt with
Morgan Gentile scoring four and Haddad adding three to go up 45-34 with 5:41 on the clock. Hailee Ford hit a trey for the Griffins to cut the lead to 45-37, before the Scots opened the game up with a 13-2 run that ended with a McDuffie 3-pointer making it 58-39 with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter. Seton Hill closed the gap to 60-47 with an 8-2 run to close the third.
The Griffins trimmed the lead to 60-51on buckets by Ford and Hallie Cowan, but 13 straight points from the Scots pushed the lead to 73-51and the Scot lead wouldn't fall below 16 the rest of the way.
Gentile paced the Scots with 20 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and five steals. McDuffie tallied 19 points while Manfredo finished with 15 points, six boards and three blocks. Boggs also reached double figure scoring with 11 points just missing the double-double with nine rebounds.
Helene Cowan and Hallie Cowan each scored 17 points to lead the Griffin offense. Ford chipped in 15 points.
With the win the Scots and Griffins are tied atop the PSAC West standings with two games remaining for each squad.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
