Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team had four players score in double figures defeating visiting Pitt-Johnstown 79-55 on Saturday afternoon in PSAC West play.
The Scots trailed 5-2 early after a M'Laya Ainsworth 3-pointer.
Morgan Gentile scored seven straight points and
Gabby McDuffie hit a jumper to put Edinboro ahead 11-5 with 5:53 to play in the first. The Mountain Cats answered with an 8-2 spurt of their own to tie the game 13-13 at the 3:15 mark. Boggs and Gentile each hit layups to put the Scots up 17-13 at the 2:10 mark.
Rachael Manfredo split a pair of free throws and Gentile hit two more at the charity stripe to put the Scots up 20-13 at the end of the first.
UPJ scored the first three points of the second quarter cutting the lead to 20-16. Edinboro answered with an 18-2 run led by seven points from McDuffie to pull ahead 38-18 with 2:55 remaining before the half. The teams traded baskets with Ainsworth scoring for UPJ at the 14 second mark to make the Edinboro halftime lead 40-22.
The Mountain Cats opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to cut the lead to 42-30 with 8:48 on the clock. The Scots answered with an 8-2 spurt of their own to push the lead back to 50-32 at the 5:17 mark on a Gentile layup. UPJ would cut the lead to 50-37 with 3:45 to play before the Scots closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 60-41 lead into the final frame.
Edinboro's lead grew to 26, 72-46, on an
Ava Haddad layup at the 5:43 mark of the fourth. The advantage never fell below 21 the rest of the way.
McDuffie scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists. Gentile added 17 points, seven helpers, fire steals and five rebounds. Haddad finished with 12 points and four assists while
Ashten Boggs scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Belle Bosch paced the Mountain Cats with 14 points and12 rebounds. Ainsworth chipped in 11 points and six boards.
The Scots return to action next Saturday with a trip to IUP. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
