Lock Haven, Pa. – The Edinboro women's volleyball team earned a sweep of Goldey-Beacom and then defeated host Lock Haven 3-1 in a pair of matches at the Bald Eagle Classic.
In the opening match with Goldey-Beacom, the Lightning built a 6-5 lead after an Edinboro attack error. A Makayla Neeland kill and a
Molly Stayer service ace put the Scots back ahead 7-6. A Goldy-Beacom attack error extended the lead to 8-6. The teams traded points to an 11-9 score before a
Faith Schneider kill and
Klaresajane Sivas service ace extended the Edinboro lead to 13-9. The Lightning cut the lead to 16-14, but the Scots scored seven straight points to take a 23-14 lead. Three straight kills from Goldey-Beacom trimmed the lead to 23-17.
Reilly Parent notched a kill and
Laney Burns a service ace to close out the set 25-17.
In the second set, the Lightning got out to a 6-5 lead after an Edinboro attack error. The Scots went on a 5-2 spurt capped by a Parent kill putting Edinboro ahead 11-7. Giuliana Joku scored a kill for the Lightning to cut the lead to 11-8. Neelands notched a kill to help push the Edinboro lead to 14-8. The Scots would go on to a 25-18 set victory.
Edinboro found themselves behind 14-10 in the third set. The Scots scored three straight points after a pair of Lightning errors and a
Grace Petro service ace. Alana Scott pushed the Goldey-Beacom lead back to 15-13 with a kill. The Scots scored the next six points keyed by a pair of kills from
Maggie Koster to take a 19-15 lead. The Lightning leveled the match 22-22 on a Scott kill. A Parent and a pair of Lightning errors gave Edinboro a 25-22 set win.
Neelands led the offense with 11 kills to go with 14 digs and two assists. Parent notched 10 kills, 11 digs, and a service ace. Petro dished out 18 assists while Burns added 17 helpers.
Against Lock Haven, the teams were tied 7-7 in the opening set. The Scots went on a 6-1 run aided by a Neelands kill and several Bald Eagle errors to take a 13-8 lead. Lock Haven scored the next three points to cut the lead to 13-11. A bad set and a Parent kill extended the Scot advantage to 15-11. The Bald Eagles went on an 11-5 run to pull ahead 22-20. Parent capped a 4-1 spurt with a kill to give Edinboro a 24-23 lead. Lola Coulter knotted the score at 24. Parent tallied a kill and a Lock Haven attack error gave the Scots a 26-24 set win.
In the second set, the Scots jumped out to a 14-7 lead after a Neelands kill. Edinboro grew the lead to 17-8 after a Schneider kill and Bald Eagle attack error. A service error and service ace pulled Lock Haven within 17-10. The teams traded points to 21-14, before the Scots reeled off four straight points to take the set 25-14.
Lock Haven took an early 8-3 lead after a Madelyn Mitchell service ace. Edinboro went on a 5-2 spurt keyed by a Stayer service ace to cut the lead to 10-7. A 7-3 spurt from the Bald Eagles pushed the lead to 17-10. The Scots scored back-to-back points on Lock Haven miscues to cut the lead to 17-12. Lock Haven finished the set with a 25-18 final score.
In the fourth set, Lock Haven got out to a 3-2 lead. Burns put the Scots up 5-3 with a kill capping a 3-0 run. The Bald Eagles scored the next four points to pull ahead 7-5. Edinboro responded with a 12-4 spurt capped by a Schneider kill. The Scot lead grew to 21-13 on a kill by Parent. Lock Haven netted the next five points to cut the advantage to 21-18. The Scots went on a 4-1 run capped by a Neelands kill to close out the match 25-19.
Parent tallied 16 kills to lead the offense while also notching 12 digs. Neelands added 14 kills and 12 digs. Stayer netted three service aces. Burns triggered the offense with 25 assists while Petro tallied 15 helpers.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they take on Bloomsburg. Match time is set for 12 p.m.
