Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller to Shepherd

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team fell 3-2 to visiting Shepherd Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
In the opening set, the Fighting Scots jumped out to an 8-3 lead. A service error trimmed the lead to 8-4 before a Maggie Koster kill followed by two more kills from Reilly Parent extended the lead to 11-4. Later in the set, Emma Hiott recorded a kill to make the score 17-12. Three straight points from the Rams trimmed the lead to 17-15. Edinboro answered back with a 6-1 run to push the lead to 23-16. Shepherd scored the next five points taking advantage of several Edinboro mistakes to cut the lead to 23-21. A Shepherd error and a kill by Makayla Neelands gave the Scots a 25-21 set win.
 
The Rams jumped out 12-6 in the second set and kept the Scots at arm's length for the rest of the set leveling the score 1-1 with a 25-19 set win.
 
Shepherd carried the momentum into the third set going ahead 7-2 after a Sophia Ryan kill. Maggie Koster recorded a kill and three Shepherd errors trimmed the lead to 7-6. The teams traded points before the Rams went on a 6-1 run to grab a 14-8 lead after an Ada McCoy kill. Shepherd closed out the third 25-19.
 
With the scored tied 8-8 in the fourth, Neelands picked up a kill sparking eight straight points to grab a 16-8 lead. The Scots closed out the set on a 7-3 spurt to force a fifth set 25-11.
 
In the fifth and the score tied 5-5, Koster recorded a kill and a Shepherd error made it 7-5 Scots. Shepherd scored the next three points to switch sides with an 8-7 lead. The Scots went on a 3-1 spurt to grab a 10-9 lead on a Neelands kill. The Rams retook the lead with an Emily Ryder kill to take an 11-10 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Neelands and Parent put Edinboro back up 12-11. The teams traded points with the Scots holding a 13-12 lead. The Rams went on a 4-1 spurt to take a 16-14 win.
 
Neelands tallied 21 kills, 15 digs and a pair of service aces. Parent added 19 kill and 14 digs. Klaresajane Sivas led the defense with 17 digs. Hiott tallied a pair of solo blocks. Laney Burns tallied 26 assists while Grace Petro notched 21 helpers.
 
The Scots return to action on Sunday when they travel to Gannon for their PSAC West opener. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
