Women’s Basketball Rolls Past California (Pa.)

 
California, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored a 69-45 victory over host California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon on Saturday inside the Convocation Center.
 
The Scots trailed 5-3 early before Taylor Blunt hit a 3-pointer sparking an 8-0 run putting Edinboro ahead 11-5 with 4:30 left in the opening quarter. Kennedy Bankett stopped the Edinboro run with a layup. Ava Haddad and Alicia Young traded buckets to make the score 13-9 with 3:41 left in the first. Blunt connected on a triple to push the Scot lead 16-9. Bankett scored the final two points of the quarter making it 16-11 going to the second.
 
Edinboro dominated the second quarter coming out of the gate with six straight points with two points each from Carmen Vasquez, Blunt and Maura Suman. The Vulcans would score the next six points to close the gap to 22-17 at the 7:13 mark. Those were the last points of the quarter for Cal as the Scots finished the second with 16 straight points to take a 38-17 lead into the half.
 
In the second half, the Vulcans trimmed the lead to 42-26 after a Bankett jumper at the 4:36 mark of the third. Blunt and Haddad scored back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to 46-26 with 3:42 to play. Cal scored five straight points to cut the advantage to 46-31 at the end of third.
 
The Scots came out in the fourth with a 12-4 spurt capped by a Rachael Manfredo layup with 6:06 to play. Hope Hawkins scored an and-one at the 5:45 mark to cut the lead to 58-38 and that was as close as the Vulcans would get as Edinboro closed out the win 69-45.
 
Manfredo led the Edinboro offense with 20 points to go with four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Blunt added 19 points, four boards, four steals and two dimes. Haddad also scored in double figures with 12 points while grabbing five rebounds, two steals and two helpers.
 
Bankett paced the Vulcans with 15 points. Young added 13 and Hawkins chipped in 12.
 
The Scots return  to action on Wednesday when they travel to IUP for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with the Crimson Hawks.
