Indiana, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision to No. 7 IUP Wednesday evening in PSAC West play.
The game went back-and-forth early with the Scots grabbing a 9-8 advantage with 5:42 left in the opening quarter on a
Taylor Blunt 3-pointer. The Crimson Hawks scored the next five points to pull ahead 13-9 at the 3:19 mark. A
Rachael Manfredo layup and a
Carla Brown triple sandwiched a Madison Zavasky layup to pull the Scots within one, 15-14 with 14 seconds to play in the first. Lily Jordan hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Crimson Hawks a 17-14 advantage heading to the second.
IUP pushed the lead to five, 21-16 after a pair of Molly Keane free throws at the 8:51 mark.
Hope Garrity split a pair of free throws before making a layup to cut the lead to 21-19 with 4:37 remaining in the second. Manfredo tied the game 23-23 for Edinboro with a pair of free throws with 3:30 left. Zavasky hit one-of-two at the line and Garrity hit a layup to put the Scots back up 25-24 at 2:58. Zavasky finished an and-one at the other end to give the Crimson Hawks the lead back 27-25. IUP closed the quarter on a 6-3 spurt to take a 33-28 lead into the break.
The Crimson Hawks scored the first six points of the second half extending the lead to 39-28 at the 8:39 mark.
Carmen Vasquez got the Scots on the board in the third with a layup at 7:52, but IUP went on a 12-0 run to push the advantage to 51-20 with 1:59 left in the third. Garrity connected on a trey to trim the lead to 51-33 before Jordan and Vasquez traded buckets to make it 53-35 heading to the final frame.
IUP extended the lead to 58-38 with a 7-3 spurt to start the fourth quarter. The Scots battled back closing the gap to 64-59 on a Blunt 3-pointer at the 35 second mark, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch helped IUP hold off the late Scot push.
Garrity led Edinboro with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field with three triples. Blunt added 15 points, four rebounds and a steal.
Marin Miller tallied 17 points to lead the Crimson Hawks. Nyshae' Weaver also scored in double figures with 10 points to go with nine rebounds.
The Scots return home to McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday when they play host to Seton Hill at 1 p.m.
