Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team used a balanced attack with four players scoring in double figures to score a key PSAC West victory over visiting Seton Hill 80-65 Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots took a 38-37 lead into the half and the teams traded points through the third with Seton Hill taking 49-48 lead on a Hallie Cowan layup with 2:49 left in the third.
Taylor Blunt hit a 3-pointer at the 1:53 mark sparking a 7-0 run putting the Scots ahead 55-49 with 39 seconds remaining in the third. The Griffins scored the final four points of the quarter to trim the advantage to 55-53 heading to the fourth.
Shaye Bailey tied the game with a layup to open the fourth quarter and the teams traded points to a 61-61 tie after a pair of Mia Kalich free throws at the 7:18 mark. Edinboro put on a defensive clinic holding the Griffins off the board for six minutes as the Scots went on a 13-0 run capped by a pair of
Taylor Phillips free throws to make it 74-61 with 1:18 to play. Seton Hill would get as close as 10 with 1:02 left, but strong free throw shooting pushed the Scots to the 80-65 victory.
The Griffins got out to the fast start building a 6-1 lead after a pair of Shaye Bailey free throws at the 8:47 mark.
Rachael Manfredo made a layup to trim the lead to 6-3 before Bailey scored again to make it 8-5 with 6:44 left in the first.
Ava Haddad converted a pair of free throws and
Bailie Brinson made a layup to trim the lead to 8-7 with 5:25 on the clock.
Seton Hill scored the next three points to extend the lead to 11-7. The Scots answered with a 7-2 run, taking a 14-13 lead on a
Taylor Blunt 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the first quarter. Helene Cowan made a pair free throws to give the Griffins a 15-14 advantage after the first quarter.
In the second, Hallie Cowan scored five straight points to extend the Seton Hill lead to 20-14 just 39 seconds into the second. The Scots trimmed the lead to 24-20 on a Blunt layup at the 5:47 mark. Mia Kalich answered with an and-one to give Seton Hill a 27-20 advantage. Edinboro scored the next six with two points each from Manfredo, Haddad and
Hope Garrity to pull within 27-26 at the 3:11 mark.
Helene Cowan hit another 3-pointer to stop the Scot run and make it 30-26. Garrity scored the next four points for Edinboro tying the game and
Rachael Manfredo put the Scots ahead 32-30 with her layup with 1:39 to play in the second. Helene Cowan connected on a triple and Kalich converted a fastbreak layup to put the Griffins back up 35-32 with 1:16 on the clock. The Scots closed the half on a 6-1 run with four from Haddad and a bucket from Blunt to take a 38-37 lead into the break.
Manfredo stuffed the stat sheet scoring 19 points while blocking six shots, pulling down five rebounds and grabbing three steals. Blunt just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine boards to go with three assists and three steals. Haddad added 14 while shooting 6-of-9 from the field and dishing out seven assists with five rebounds. Garrity added 14 points as well.
Helene Cowan paced the Griffins with 20 points. Bailey chipped in 15 while Kalich tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse
