Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball got out to a fast start and never trailed scoring a 79-50 victory over visiting Slippery Rock Wednesday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots came out of the gate fast scoring the first 16 points of the contest and keeping the Rock off the board for over eight minutes in the opening quarter.
Rachael Manfredo scored seven in the 16-0 run to start the game. Deryn Moye got the Rock on the board at the 1:32 mark of the first and
Carmen Vasquez answered with a layup and
Ava Haddad split a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 19-2 with under a minute left in the opening frame. Sophia Hook hit a 3-pointer to make it 19-5 Edinboro after one.
Play was back and forth in the second with the lead holding at 15, 25-10, with 6:53 on the clock. The Scots went on a 10-3 spurt capped by a
Hope Garrity triple to extend the lead to 35-13 with 3:30 left in the second. Iyanna Wade completed an and-one to pull back within 35-16. Another Garrity trey and a
Taylor Blunt layup pushed the advantage to 40-16 with 2:38 remaining. The Rock scored the final five points of the quarter to make it 40-21 at the break.
In the second half, Slippery Rock trimmed the lead to 44-27 with 7:38 mark of the third quarter. Vasquez and Manfredo hit back-to-back layups to push the lead back out to 48-27 with 6:03 on the clock. Slippery Rock cut the lead to 54-39 on an Alyssa Gillin jumper with 2:27 to play in the third. Edinboro answered with a 9-4 spurt to take a 63-43 lead at the end of the third.
The Scot lead never slipped below 15 in the fourth quarter securing the PSAC West victory.
Manfredo paced the Edinboro offense with 17 points to go with four rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists. Blunt added 11 points and a team-high eight boards.
Maura Suman and
Taylor Phillips each added 11 points. Garrity was the fifth Scot in double figures with 10.
Wade led the Rock with 13 points and six assists. Gillin chipped in 11 points.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they travel to Clarion for an 1 p.m. tipoff inside Tippin Gymnasium.
