Four Fighting Scots Score in Double Figures as Men’s Basketball Downs Bloomsburg

Edinboro, Pa. – Rowan Carmichael led four Fighting Scots scoring in double figures as the Edinboro men's basketball team defeated visiting Bloomsburg 81-71 Saturday afternoon in PSAC crossover action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Scots held a 33-31 lead at the half and Xion Nichols tied the game with a tip-in bucket on the first possession of the second half. Edinboro responded with a 14 straight points capped by a Carmichael 3-pointer at the 16:47 mark making the score 47-33 Scots.
 
Bloomsburg went on a 6-2 spurt cutting the advantage to 49-39 on a pointer by Nichols with 15:14 to play. Back-to-back buckets from Evan Berger and Mekhi Reynolds extended the lead to 53-39 with 14:02 left. The Huskies answered with a 9-3 run to pull within 56-48 at the 11:19 mark of the second half.
 
After Reynolds split a pair of free throws at the 8:51 mark to make the score 57-48, the Huskies went on a 11-7 spurt to cut the advantage to 64-59 with 4:57 to play. Carmichael completed an old-school 3-point play to push the lead to 67-59. After Reis Naugle split a pair of free throws, Berger made a layup to extend the lead to 69-60 at the 4:03 mark.
 
Bloomsburg would get as close as seven, 71-64, with 2:37 on the clock, but the Scots iced the game at the free throw line securing the 81-71 victory.
 
In the first half, the Scots came out firing with Carmichael turning a pair of steals into four fast break points sandwiching a Reynolds jumper to give Edinboro a 6-0 lead to open the contest. The Huskies answered back with a 9-3 run tying the game on a pair of Naugle free throws with 13:48 on the clock.
 
Berger gave Edinboro the lead back with deuce at 13:22, but Bloomsburg scored the next six points to take a 15-11 lead with 9:47 left in the opening half. The Scots answered with seven straight points of their own to take a 16-15 lead on a Dakari Bradford layup with 8:10 showing on the clock.
 
The lead swung back to the Huskies when Naugle capped an 8-3 spurt with a layup at 5:40. Jonathan Anderson gave the Scots a lift off the bench defensively entering the game and getting a steal and finding Berger for a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 23-22. On the next possession Anderson grabbed another steal this time finding Reynolds for the trey to put Edinboro back up 25-23 with 4:36 left. Reynolds hit another 3-pointer to make it 28-23 and Anderson hit a triple of his own with 2:40 left to push the lead to 31-24. Bloomsburg cut the lead to 31-28 with four straight points, but Wilson-Daniel Charlot scored with 57 seconds left to push the lead back to 33-28. Naugle hit a triple with 26 seconds remaining in the half to cut the Scots lead to 33-31 at the break.
 
Carmichael tallied 23 points and four steals. Reynolds added 19 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals. Berger added 17 points and seven boards. Bryce Baez also reached double figure scoring with 11 points to go with six rebounds.
 
Naugle paced the Huskies with 30 points, three rebounds and three assists. Nichols added 15 points.
 
The Scots return to action on Wednesday when they host Gannon at 7:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
