Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team built a large lead in the first half and ran away from visiting Clarion 78-63 on Wednesday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots scored the first eight points of the game with
Rachael Manfredo scoring four of them. Niah Smedley stopped the run for Clarion with a layup at the 7:44 mark. Edinboro answered with the next 10 points capped by a
Taylor Phillips steal and scored at 3:54 to extend the lead to 18-2. The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to 21-8 with a 6-3 spurt with 1:55 on the clock. Manfredo hit a pair of free throws and
Hope Garrity a layup with 4 seconds remaining to send the Scots to the second leading 25-8.
Maura Suman and Manfredo each hit layups to start the second to push the Edinboro advantage to 29-8 at the 7:19 mark of the second. Clarion scored three points all at the free throw line to trim the lead to 29-11. Edinboro opened the lead up to 36-11 with a 7-1 run after a Phillips free throw at the 2:38 mark. After a Claire Noble layup with 1:59 on the clock the Scot lead was 38-14. Edinboro finished the half on a 7-2 run to take a 45-16 lead into the half.
The Scots held Clarion to 3-of-27 shooting from the field and 0-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc.
Edinboro's lead grew to 38, 56-18, after a
Bailie Brinson layup at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter. The Golden Eagles scored the next five points to trim the lead to 56-23.
Ava Haddad hit a layup and Manfredo scored the next four points to extend the advantage to 62-23 with 1:55 left in the third. The Golden Eagles scored nine straight and Phillips hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Scots into the fourth up 65-32.
The Golden Eagles chipped away at the Edinboro lead in the fourth but never got closer than 77-63 with 19 seconds to play.
The Scots were highly efficient shooting 31-of-57 from the field with 44 points in the paint. Manfredo finished with a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Haddad finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Phillips tallied 11 points, two assists and a steal.
Noble led the Golden Eagles with 13 points and two rebounds. Arianna Sietz added 10 points and six boards.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host California (Pa.) for Senior Day. Edinboro will also celebrate Student and Community Appreciation Day and the Edinboro members of the PSAC 75.
