Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team scored a dominant 85-64 win over visiting California (PA) in the first round of the PSAC Championship Monday night inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The teams traded baskets to open the game before Edinboro went on a 12-4 run capped by a
Carmen Vasquez layup at the 4:40 mark to give the Scots a 14-6 advantage. Mya Morgan cut the lead to 14-8 with a bucket with 3:50 left in the opening quarter. Buckets from Vasquez and
Rachael Manfredo extended the lead to 18-8 with 2:24 on the clock. Morgan cut the lead to 18-10 with a jumper and Manfredo scored the last four points of the first to push the Scot edge to 22-10 after one.
The Scots carried the momentum into the second quarter holding Cal to just three points over the first seven and a half minutes extending the lead to 32-13 with a
Taylor Blunt layup with 2:25 left in the second. Cal finished the half on a 9-6 spurt to cut the Edinboro lead to 38-22 at the half.
In the third, the Vulcans trimmed the lead to 44-34 after a pair of Trinity Balog free throws at the 5:04 mark.
Hope Garrity answered with a 3-pointer and Manfredo finished an and-one to push the lead back to 50-34. Edinboro carried play the rest of the quarter finishing on a 15-7 run to take a 68-47 advantage to the final quarter.
The Scot lead swelled to 81-55 with 4:16 to play after a
Carla Brown free throw and didn't fall below 20 the rest of the way.
Manfredo lead all scorers with a career-high 31 points to go with three rebounds, two blocks, two assists and a steal. Vasquez tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards. Blunt added 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Maura Suman dished out nine helpers to go with four points and three steals.
Hope Hawkins led the way for the Vulcans with 17 points and seven rebounds. Kennedy Bankett and Kimaya Williams each added 11.
The Scots advance to the PSAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday with a trip to Lock Haven. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.
