Lock Haven, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team never trailed defeating Lock Haven the top-seeded team in the PSAC East 68-57 Wednesday night in the PSAC Quarterfinal inside Thomas Fieldhouse.
The Scots came out of the gate fast, grabbing an 8-1 lead at the 7:33 mark with
Ava Haddad leading the charge with the first four points. Lock Haven responded with six straight points to trim the Edinboro advantage to 8-7 with 6:01 left in the first quarter. Buckets by
Carmen Vasquez and
Maura Suman pushed the Scot lead to 12-7 with 3:25 on the clock.
The Bald Eagles trimmed the advantage to 14-11 on a Madeline Evans layup at the 3:08 mark.
Rachael Manfredo and
Taylor Blunt scored on a either side of a Jenadia Jordan free throw to give Edinboro an 18-12 lead after the first.
Jordan scored the first four points of the second quarter to pull Lock Haven within 18-16 with 6:49 left in the second. Blunt hit a 3-pointer to extend the advantage to 21-16 with 6:30 to go in the second.
Lock Haven cut the lead to 25-22 on a Jordan layup at the 2:03 mark.
Taylor Phillips scored five points around an Evans free throw to give Edinboro a 30-23 lead with 32 seconds to go in the half. Jordan scored at the horn to cut the Edinboro halftime lead to 30-25.
In the third, Jordan cut the Edinboro edge to 32-29 with a pair of free throws at the 7:19 mark. The Scots answered with a 7-2 run capped by a Haddad and-one with 5:37 left in the quarter to take a 39-31 lead. Lock Haven answered with a 7-3 spurt of their own to pull within 42-38 with 3:44 on the clock. Edinboro scored the next five points to push the lead to 47-38 after a
Carla Brown free throw with 2:25 remaining in the third. The Bald Eagles scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the lead to 47-43 going to the final frame.
Manfredo scored the first three points of the fourth to extend the lead to 50-43. Alana Robinson hit a jumper to cut the advantage to 50-45. Blunt and Vasquez each scored for the Scots to make the lead 54-45 with 5:59 to play. The Scot lead was still nine, 58-49, after a Suman layup with 4:19 on the clock.
Jordan scored seven points as the Bald Eagles went on a 7-2 run to pull within 60-56 at the 2:39 mark. Manfredo found Brown on a cut for a layup to extend the lead to 62-56 with 2:15 left. The Scots finished the game 6-for-6 from the free throw line to set the final at 68-57.
Haddad led the Scots in scoring with 17 points to go with three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Manfredo tallied 13 points, three boards, three helpers and a pair of blocks. Blunt led the Scots with 10 rebounds to go with nine points.
Jordan paced the Bald Eagles with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists. Robinson added 15 points and Evans finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Scots will take on IUP on Saturday at Gannon. The time is still to be determined.
