EDINBORO, Pa. — The Edinboro women's soccer team fell to Mercy 2-0 Thursday at Sox Harrison Stadium.
The match began with strong defense on both sides. Edinboro's
Jada Cole had multiple attempts on goal, her best a shot in the 9th minute that was saved by Heiddis Sigurdardottir.
Brianna Garey, in goal for the Scots, also had an impressive first period, making crucial saves highlighted by a one-on-one stop on Gracie DiPalo in the 43rd minute to keep the game scoreless into the half.
Mercy took the lead early in the second period with a goal by Astrid Borglund in the 46th minute, assisted by Connor Leahy. Despite efforts from Edinboro, including a corner kick and a shot that hit the right woodwork, Mercy extended its lead with a goal from Hailey Metzger at the 56th minute, assisted by Blake Goldstein.
Edinboro had a chance to reduce the deficit with a penalty kick in the 67th minute, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Mercy maintained its defensive stance, with Sigurdardottir making a crucial save against a shot by Cole in the 85th minute, to set the 2-0 final.
Garey recorded seven saves in goal, facing 12 shots. Cole led the team with five shots, including three on target. Patterson contributed with two shots, one of which was on goal.
The Scots are back in action against IUP on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Sox Harrison Stadium in the PSAC West opener for both teams.
